bartcusters Posted July 19, 2004 Posted July 19, 2004 Being on a tight budget, I only want to spec options that are absolutely necessary. Later on, when budget allows mods can still be made. Things I think I really need are: - RAC bar - 3" 4-point harness - 4 classic style wheels + 185 yoko a032r I'm in serious doubt about the LSD or not (car used for weekend blasts and occasional track days). Really can't decide on this one, desperately need knowledgeable opninions. Even after reading http://www.howstuffworks.com/differential.htm I have a hard time deciding because I'm not really a car techie. Are there absolute necceseties I overlooked ? Or things that are really a pain to do/change aftwerwards ? Regards Bart Quote
adhawkins Posted July 19, 2004 Posted July 19, 2004 I'd definitely go for an LSD if you can afford to. My car was infuriating on the track without it (trying in vain to accelerate out of corners just got the inside wheel spinning). With the LSD it's a whole lot more tractable, and fun too Andy Quote
felters Posted July 19, 2004 Posted July 19, 2004 Presumably you've already decided NOT to go with the factory "Girlies" option pack of windscreens, interior, heater etc. Thought so. Good man. Quote
bartcusters Posted July 19, 2004 Author Posted July 19, 2004 Presumably you've already decided NOT to go with the factory "Girlies" option pack of windscreens, interior, heater etc. Thought so. Good man. No. They cost money and add weight, so I won't buy them. But there's one "girlie" thing I do like http://www.zauber-tuning.de/Ex_04_fr.htm click on left upper picture (Karosserie Zubehör), then scroll down to "Speedsterscheibe" and "Speedsterlook". Love the idea of full screen for weekend blasts with girlfriend and aeroscreen for trackdays. Quote
ChrisG Posted July 19, 2004 Posted July 19, 2004 The problem Id say you have is that for any track work you really need to dry sump the 'bird engine otherwise they are very prone to going pop. Chris Quote
Bazzer Posted July 19, 2004 Posted July 19, 2004 If I was on a tight budget and was specing a MegaBird I would re-spec to a MegaBlade. Bazzer Quote
Nick.Petty Posted July 19, 2004 Posted July 19, 2004 Best thing I can suggest is not to push the lever forward when you are already at maximum revs in 2nd. Best to pull it back to engage a higher gear. Pushing it forward in error like someone not too far away from where I am sitting did yesterday, might cost you money Quote
bartcusters Posted July 19, 2004 Author Posted July 19, 2004 If I was on a tight budget and was specing a MegaBird I would re-spec to a MegaBlade. Bazzer That was my starting point also. But unfortunately Belgian law doesn't accept carbed engines without cat anymore. And since the Megablade uses a pre 1995 blade engine, it is not an option anymore for me Quote
ChrisG Posted July 19, 2004 Posted July 19, 2004 Couldnt you build a Megablade with a 929cc early injected blade engine (2000/2001)? It wouldnt be as straight forward as a carbed engine from a wiring point of view, but AFAIK they are the same block so the engine cradle / manifold etc should all fit. Edited to say that the early injected blade engines might not be quite as similar as I was lead to believe, see this thread here Chris Quote
Bazzer Posted July 19, 2004 Posted July 19, 2004 Are you allowed to buy one that has been registered in the UK ? Quote
oioi Posted July 19, 2004 Posted July 19, 2004 If I was looking to build new and on a budget there are some interesting things you can do. first of what are you building the car for? you say road and some track. If you are after performance rather comfort then do away witht the seats as an option and make your own out of two part foam. worried about the costs of instruments ? have a look here - http://home.c2i.net/toratlel/Dash7.htm there are other areas money can be saved, look at different manufactures of dash's, aeroscreen, mirrors, lights etc etc. As for an lsd I personally do not think they are essential. If you were competing then you would need one. But for a fast road car its not essential. the car can still be driven sideways but donuts wont happen they are easy enough to retro fit as well, so I would say save your money. I am sure there are lots of other areas money can be saved as well. good luck and spend the money in the right place (go faster and reliability bits) and save money on bling and comfort crap Oi Oi Quote
