Man On The Clapham Omnibus Posted July 17, 2004 Posted July 17, 2004 Had you chaps noticed, "accidents" don't happen any more? Oh no; they're "collisions" now! An RTA is now an RTC (road traffic collision). This afternoon I saw a late model Escort A*** first into a hedge on the A40 with BiB in attendance sporting a sign that said "POLICE - COLLISION" on the usual blue pvc folding sign. Have they had to buy new signs simply because some ****** somewhere has decreed that "accident" is non-PC but "collision" is OK? Oh, Puhleeese! Quote
steve_m Posted July 17, 2004 Posted July 17, 2004 I used to work for a large construction company and we never had accidents, accidents are preventable, *most* acts of God are accidents but injuries at work are always preventable. In a way I'm glad they're doing this, maybe shifting their focus away from speed being the 'worst of all evils' to actually looking at what causes injuries and death - usually driver error or lack of thought/not looking, usually nothing to do with speed. Man On The Clapham Omnibus Posted July 17, 2004 Author Posted July 17, 2004 Don't hold your breath, though, will you? Quote
pistonbroke Posted July 17, 2004 Posted July 17, 2004 I can see there might be some problems with reading ability and comprehension . I can see T.V. campaign to increase public awareness to the 'new signs. Got this picture of J.Blogg stomping on the brake ped to read the thing and thus causing a multiple collision. sh*t , what the devil does that say? oh! ouch ! Just like all them welsh road signs that had to be re done cause they insisted on putting the welsh b4 the english translation. What a mad world. Quote
steve_m Posted July 17, 2004 Posted July 17, 2004 Don't hold your breath, though, will you? No, it'll take a mass revolt to turn the tide and the general population couldn't manage a minor whinge at the moment. Quote
neilb Posted July 18, 2004 Posted July 18, 2004 So what happens if you don't hit anything? Are they going to need sign that say that a vehicle has unintentionally left the road due to unforeseen circumstances? Quote
Man On The Clapham Omnibus Posted July 18, 2004 Author Posted July 18, 2004 My thoughts, too, Neilb. It looks to my jaundiced eyes like a step along the road to some Orwellian "thought police". Ministry of Truth next I reckon. Except they don't seem able to see the truth for the, well, you fill in that bit.. Quote
neilb Posted July 18, 2004 Posted July 18, 2004 BTW MOTCO been meaning to ask - Bus lanes good or bad thing? Quote
Man On The Clapham Omnibus Posted July 19, 2004 Author Posted July 19, 2004 Dunno Neilb. There's one here along the A40 from J3 of the M40 to High Wycombe and it has made the non-bus traffic far worse for the benefit of what seems like very few buses. What's more it works only in one direction so theoretically all the buses should end up at one end! when my wife wanted to use the bus to get to work in HW there wasn't a suitable service at the relevant time and one way the bus is from one operator and the return journey from another. So, return or season tickets were impossible. In other places they may be useful but as a non-bus user since I was 17 I cannot say I know both sides of the story. Of course, that nice Mr Prescott says that closing one lane out three on the M4 to all but buses speeded things up! Better close all lanes to cars and we'd get there in no time. What do you think about them? Quote
Man On The Clapham Omnibus Posted July 19, 2004 Author Posted July 19, 2004 Of course, stupid of me. OFCOURSE BUS LANES ARE A GOOD THING! D'Oh! Quote
Blatman Posted July 19, 2004 Posted July 19, 2004 that nice Mr Prescott says that closing one lane out three on the M4 to all but buses speeded things up! Actually, taxis, and most importantly, motorbikes can use the M4 bus lane. I'm all for it.... Quote

steve_m Posted July 19, 2004 Posted July 19, 2004 I think bikes should pay more road tax than cars because they get to use more of the road Quote
