Plus in the mean-time, whilst not "using" the cage, it makes the car handle noticeably better.

Arguably a FIA bar/petty strut would do this too, but nothing like as much.

I was quite stunned by how much difference it made  :t-up:

No more (well, *MUCH* less...) creaking from the tub and it felt, albeit subjectively, stiffer than before.

Mind you, having reduced the tub flexing it probably means my diff is going to fall off now.... ;)  :D

Check out the factory parts store, but I think it's in the region of 250 quid to buy one. Fitting the bar itself is fairly easy, it's just getting it through any boot box you may have that can be tricky.

Cheers mate,

have jigsaw will travel I'll just have to add it to my winter wish list and start some sort of criminal activities to raise the funds

Interesting thread tho, but when you look at alot of other convertable type cars eg morgan style & other older styled kit cars they have no roll over bars at all, even many standard production cars, eg MG midget, MGBGT upto present day have precious little roll over protection including mercs etc.

Very good point IMO, does anyone know manufacturers have to do roll over tests etc for tin tops and if so do they have to do them for soft tops.

IIRC some of the mercs have a `pop up` bar triggered in a crash

I think alot of the strength also comes from the windscreen surround on topless tintops.

Hi folks. Another of the standard rollover bar converts who intend to upgrade. Just wondering if anyone knows if there are RAC bars available that still allow the weather gear to be fitted?

It has been done apparently. You might need some extra material sewing into the bottom of the hood.

If you do a search, you should find plenty of discussion about this.

For those interested, an rac bar kit from westfield is £230 inc vat, I bought one a few weeks ago and they threw in free delivery & I received it the next day.

I couldn't find anyone else who currently makes one but the wf one is good value imo anyway.

I'll be fitting it shortly & will be cutting my bootbox to accomodate it, I might make a template for it if anyone is interested in borrowing it after for a wide bodied car?

I read a few threads reg the weather gear too & apparently if you cut the middle stay out of the frame you can substitute the bar for it instead, one way to find out!

Cheers,

Mark.  :)

For all those of you contemplating replacing your std rollbar with an RAC one, check out Steppenwolf's comprehensive (as ever) guide to doing it here  ;)

If only Westfield would pay him to rewrite the build manual for them, half of all the topics posted on here would be redundant at a stroke  ;)  :D  :D

how do you fit one of these with a locking boot box though?

It has been done. I hate to say it but 'do a search'. There are some photos on here of the various options.

yep lots of modern open top cars do use the windscreen surround for roll over protection and quiet a few have a flip up roll over bar or hoops.

i have seen pictures of volvo C70 rolled without the rollover protection hoops being activated and the screen pillars held it up apparently without moving when measured.

Let me know how you get on with the weather gear?

Cheers.
