steppenwolf Posted July 7, 2004 Posted July 7, 2004 Help! I know how to change the default directory for Windows Explorer when calling the program from a 'short-cut' but how do you do it if you access Explorer by right clicking on 'START' and then selecting 'Explore'? O/S W98 SE Quote
adhawkins Posted July 7, 2004 Posted July 7, 2004 You can't. What you're asking Explorer to do by doing this, is explore your start menu. Does your keyboard have a 'Windows' key on it? If so, hold it down and press 'E', another way of opening explorer. Andy Quote
Dracoro Posted July 7, 2004 Posted July 7, 2004 Why would you want to do this anyway? I usually explore from My Computer - located on desktop and start menu so only one click away. Even put a Windows explorer shortcut on the desktop and start menu if you really need to but it's essentially doing the same thing anyway. Quote
Camel_Landy Posted July 7, 2004 Posted July 7, 2004 Explorer? What's that? Where do I find Explorer on my Mac..... Mark. Quote
thos Posted July 7, 2004 Posted July 7, 2004 You wont be able to edit where the Explorer starts, cos your asking it to start exploring from the Start Menu. What you will probably be able to do it is add another entry in that list, called 'Steves Explorer' and start 'explorer.exe c:\'. I havent got a Windows98 machine to test on, but a key under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\Directory\shell should do the job, try copying what's done with the find command, but lose the ddeexec tree. If you've got Winamp installed you should already see a few entries in there, so you could try copying/editing them. Make sense ? Drop me a PM if you're stuck, I can probably give it a shot on a 98 machine tomorrow evening. Tom Quote
steppenwolf Posted July 7, 2004 Author Posted July 7, 2004 Thanks for your replies guys. Why would you want to do this anyway? Because I can reach Explorer with just 2 mouse clicks without having to minimise any running programs. Following on from my own argument, however, by placing a shortcut to Explorer on the 'left click' START menu achieves the same thing ( but editable ) with two left clicks so I guess that is as good a way of doing it as any. Its just that I have got used to right clicking on the START button and it would be nice if I ended up in the root directory automatically without having to change nmy standard method of operating! Tom, yes that basically makes sense so I will lok into the registry alteration. Quote
adhawkins Posted July 7, 2004 Posted July 7, 2004 Stepps, do you have a Windows key? If so, Windows + E is by far the quickest way. Andy Quote
steppenwolf Posted July 7, 2004 Author Posted July 7, 2004 Andy, Thanks, I have just tried that and it is quick as you say - job done! Quote
adhawkins Posted July 7, 2004 Posted July 7, 2004 Other useful ones: Windows + R - Run Windows + D - Minimize to desktop (again to restore I think) Windows + F - Find Andy Quote
mb893 Posted July 8, 2004 Posted July 8, 2004 Get a programmable keyboard... one button and job done (as long as you can remember what button to push that is). Quote
Pete Collins Posted July 8, 2004 Posted July 8, 2004 Create a shortcut to explorer.exe in the quicklaunch area and then change its properties to: C:\WINDOWS\EXPLORER.EXE /n,/e,C:\ This will open Explorer at C:\ with a single click. Quote
Blatman Posted July 8, 2004 Posted July 8, 2004 Windows + D - Minimize to desktop (again to restore I think) Windows + M on my 98SE, and 2000 machines.... I *love* keyboard shortcuts Quote
