Blatman Posted July 5, 2004 Posted July 5, 2004 Yes, points noted, but the costs are same whatever engine TB's, ECU's and mapping sessions are done on? They are, mostly. There are some exceptions. However, you said: So maybe the Zetec doesn't cost that much to get decent power out of after all! The mods carried out to the engine in the article you quote, including dyno time, will cost, as I said, approaching 4 grand. This is NOT the same as "...doesn't cost that much to get decent power out of... " I don't doubt the feasability. I do doubt that it's *not expensive*.... Quote
gregh Posted July 5, 2004 Posted July 5, 2004 I bought my car like this, and haven't verified the figures ,but its a 1.8l zetec, supposedly pushing out 174bhp @ 6980rpm. It's meant to have: Scholar Racing (Formula Ford Engine Builders) Zetec 1.8I 16v. Ported and gas flowed head Fast road Kent cams Jenvey throttle bodies 3D MBE 965 engine management system Quote
Matt Seabrook Posted July 5, 2004 Posted July 5, 2004 I would be surprised if you could get that much power out of an 1800 Zetec with 130 cams and no head mods. I have been playing with Zetecs for some time now and my 2000cc Zetec only makes 210bhp with the same T/Bodies as the ones in the mag and my engine has fast road cams and a ported head. I think the power figure is more than a little suspect. Quote
BEN99W Posted July 5, 2004 Posted July 5, 2004 Ian What was the name of the company who developed the engine? Retaining the original plenum sounds quite appealing as it would save me having to cut up the bonnet. Also it would be nice to put some numbers (£) next to the power claims rather than just expensive/inexpensive I've yet to go down the getting more power path but would like to know what all my options are ... cheers Ben Quote
Ian Podmore Posted July 5, 2004 Posted July 5, 2004 Retaining the original plenum sounds quite appealing Ben - The standard plenum was thrown in the bin I'm afraid. I would be surprised if you could get that much power out of an 1800 Zetec with 130 cams and no head mods Had me re-reading the article a few times believe me! Formula Ford spec doesn't allow for head work if my memory serves me correctly. And I can't believe that blue-printing and balancing can be worth that much more. Most tuners quote 190bhp with porting, fast road cams and TB's so I was amazed and confused at the same time........ Perhaps they 'omitted' some of the detail from the specification, then I admit it would make more sense. The starting point of 160bhp before sorting out the mapping sounds right, but the mapping would have to be a long way out to get another 30 bhp? And if IIRR they were using supermarket fuel As for Andy's comment on getting a VX to start with Have you been on the Stella or something Quote
adhawkins Posted July 5, 2004 Posted July 5, 2004 As for Andy's comment on getting a VX to start with Have you been on the Stella or something Well, if you're just in a power p******** contest, then go for the Vx. If you want a real engine, get a Zetec! Andy (who knows nothing of substance about engines, so is just stirring ) Quote
Matt Seabrook Posted July 5, 2004 Posted July 5, 2004 Must be honest I have a Vx and a Zetec Westy the Zetec has cams and head work and the Vx has cams. The Zetec has T/Bodies and the Vx has carbs the Vx is 540kg the Zetec is about 585kg and the Zetec is quiker and feels it. Just wish my race car (Vx) was as fast as my road car. Oh well I can see a rebuild coming this winter Quote

Blatman Posted July 5, 2004 Posted July 5, 2004 Matt knows that if he does the same work to the Vx as he's done to the Zetec, he'll be looking at ~230bhp, maybe a bit more. He's just shy.... Quote
Matt Seabrook Posted July 6, 2004 Posted July 6, 2004 May be mate but it would cost an extra £500 on a bottom end rebuild first. Spend the extra £500 on the Zetec and I could have had a big valve head and had 225bhp. No must not go here again Quote
