martyn.creed Posted July 2, 2004 Posted July 2, 2004 Hi this is the first time i have posted so bare with me! I have a westfield GTZ 1800 Zetec with jenvey throttle bodies, i bought the car second hand and as far as i am aware this is how it comes out of the factory. I have been told that it has 160BHP. I want to increase the power and low end performance, basically improve the acceleration. Can anyone advise me on a different set-up to achieve my goal? Cheers Martyn Quote
Ian Podmore Posted July 2, 2004 Posted July 2, 2004 Welcome to the fold. You will find all you need at this link.... Wilder cams and head work (porting and raising compression ratio) and a remap of your ecu will see you up in the 185bhp region. Have a look at www.dunnell.co.uk when the web site is working again, or www.raceline.co.uk Quote
neilwillis Posted July 2, 2004 Posted July 2, 2004 Swap it for a 2ltr Zetec. You can pick them up cheap from scrappies these days. Joining the club is also worth about 5bhp, it was the best £25.00 I spent on my build. Quote
Ian Podmore Posted July 5, 2004 Posted July 5, 2004 I read an interesting article in Track and Race Car this weekend on an 1800 Zetec with individual taper throttle bodies, a standard 130 cam, and skimmed head (CR 11:1), plus balanced and blue printed bottom end. Made 197 bhp on the dyno So maybe the Zetec doesn't cost that much to get decent power out of after all! Quote
Blatman Posted July 5, 2004 Posted July 5, 2004 Sod the cost. I'm sceptical about the claims, although I haven't read the article. Mind you, even if I had, it's rare for me to believe everything I read. You know what journalists are like. Never let the truth get in the way of a good story...... Quote
adhawkins Posted July 5, 2004 Posted July 5, 2004 Sod the cost. The reason I asked was to check the 'So it looks like you can get power out of a Zetec without spending too much money' statement... Andy Quote
Blatman Posted July 5, 2004 Posted July 5, 2004 Like I say, don't believe everything you read.... Quote
Ian Podmore Posted July 5, 2004 Posted July 5, 2004 The article was very short, and a bit of an ad for a company who I'd never heard of! They took an ex-Formula Ford engine which uses the standard 130 plenum like on my car (still...) which makes 145bhp when blue-printed etc. They then put on some TB's and ran it with the control FF Pectel ECU and got 160bhp. They then fully mapped the engine on a dyno (not a RR) and got loads more power at the top end and a torque curve that looked as good as an VX XE one (which is excellent in my opinion). OK, maybe 197bhp is a bit high, say take off at least 7bhp for the blueprinting and balancing, but that still gets the engine into the 180bhp plus area with a head skim and individual TB's properly mapped. You can mock all you like, but that in my book is not bad for minimal modification on an engine you can by for peanuts by the container load. Now how do I convince the wife that my inlet system and ECU is up the shute and all needs replacing with a set of TB's Oh, and But how much did all that cost? Track and Race Cars only costs about £3.50 a month Quote
Blatman Posted July 5, 2004 Posted July 5, 2004 Absolutely NOT mocking, just sceptical. Also... but that in my book is not bad for minimal modification on an engine you can by for peanuts by the container load. Adding individual TB's and a new ECU to a "stock" engine is neither easy, nor cheap. Likewise, dyno time to optimise the thing isn't cheap either. I expect that lot to add up to the thick end of 4 grand... not good value at all... Quote
adhawkins Posted July 5, 2004 Posted July 5, 2004 I expect that lot to add up to the thick end of 4 grand... not good value at all... That's what I was driving at. Before I got my car I was getting estimates of around 1500 quid to stick TBs onto a carburettor fed engine... Andy Quote
shaun Posted July 5, 2004 Posted July 5, 2004 Raceline do some very good upgrades - easy to get 200bhp upgrade with some head work at a reasonable price. It then gets expensive beyond this. Quote
Ian Podmore Posted July 5, 2004 Posted July 5, 2004 Yes, points noted, but the costs are same whatever engine TB's, ECU's and mapping sessions are done on? Absolutely NOT mocking, just sceptical. No problem, but Zetecs are better than ....... Quote
adhawkins Posted July 5, 2004 Posted July 5, 2004 Yes, points noted, but the costs are same whatever engine TB's, ECU's and mapping sessions are done on? I guess...but you get something like 20 BHP by choosing a Vx as your starting point over a Zetec... Andy (Zetec driver ) Quote
