Hi - recently joined WSCC as I bought a Sport 2000 last week.  Have not stopped walking around with a maniacal grin.  My car had both the 4000rpm-ish misfire and a rev counter problem.  Went to Northampton Motorsport (what a great service!;) yesterday to resolve the misfire with great success (wrong idle jets in Webers even though they were "correct" according to manufacturer).  Whilst on the rolling road the graph showed that, even though the car was revving to 7k according to the instruments, there seemed to be more to play with as it was showing the engine to have around 143BHP.  Troy from NM then attached an alternative counter and it showed that the VDO counter was reading 1500rpm too high at the top end!  Eventually proved the card to have 167BHP which is about spot on for a 2ltr Zetec but it involved taking the rev counter needle way past it's limiter!  He recommended replacing the VDO with something that works!  The fix with the capacitor (or whatever it is) sounds a tad complex for me.  I am just about able to change the oil!

Fantastic experience to see the car strapped down and redlined!

:D

The Zetec is a bit prone to plugs and leads. This can cause a miss under load

Just went out for a blat, seem to have the same problem at high revs as you.

The VDO tacho seems to be reading high but the only thing that lets me know when I'm at 6800rpm is the rev limiter starting to cut in. Reading is fine at lower revs.

Got to the stage now that I can't be :arse:'d with the tacho now.

If you get a chance to get the car checked out on the rolling road it may be that it is completely stuffed like mine.  Had I not checked it out then I would have been driving around like a doris for the rest of my life - it has really made a difference to the car's performance

The plan is to get it on a rolling road soon.

Anybody know of any good places in the Worcestershire area?

The last time I had this done Aldon Automotive carried it out but that was 11 years ago on my mini.

Are they still going with the rolling road and are they any good?
