Numptie Posted June 22, 2004 Posted June 22, 2004 Clutch seems to be slipping (MegaBlade) when pulling in any gear. Will get to have a look at the manual later on. In the meantime, anyone know if it's an easy adjustment? TIA Cheers, N Quote
Mark Purves Posted June 22, 2004 Posted June 22, 2004 So whats the third one going to be then?? Quote
mb893 Posted June 22, 2004 Posted June 22, 2004 Make sure you have some slack at the engine end of the cable(the clutch arm)... If you have, could be the springs have turned to putty or that the friction plates has just worn down, warped plain plate or if you're really lucky - all three I'd check the cable adjustment first, then pop the clutch cover off and have a look the springs for length. If they're OK probably means a new clutch. Edited for: You haven't changed the oil recently have you? These clutches aren't that keen on fully syth oil. Quote
Andy @ Cat Posted June 22, 2004 Posted June 22, 2004 I serviced my car using Motul full synthetic oil, and at the same time put a complete new clutch in. Two weeks later at Cadwell suffered massive clutch slip. Changed the clutch again this time I used Castrol semi synthetic and it’s been fine ever since. Quote
catflap Posted June 22, 2004 Posted June 22, 2004 I found the same thing (with some brands of fully synth oil- found castrol R4 (think that’s it) to be ok)....Its very odd, as the pre 95 engines should use semi, and the post 95 should use fully synth (according to haynes) Quote
moomin Posted June 22, 2004 Posted June 22, 2004 soak your frictions in mineral oil for 24hrs before fitting... moomin Quote
ChrisG Posted June 22, 2004 Posted June 22, 2004 Barnett super heavy springs get my vote, I put an EBC kevlar clutch in (because it was less than half the price of a Honda one! ) with brand new Honda springs and it still slipped, but I put in the Barnett springs and its been fine ever since. mb893 Posted June 22, 2004 Posted June 22, 2004 Had a bad experience with Barnett bits... refit with all new Honda parts and have a chat chat with Jack at Holeshot about 'big' springs. My engine ate a Barnett jobbie in next to no time and an EBC Kevlar one in even less... standard Honda bits and truely heavey duty Busa (of all things) springs and no slippage yet. Quote
ChrisG Posted June 23, 2004 Posted June 23, 2004 Yeh but to be fair John you are putting 50% more power through it than its designed for! TBH I would have gone for the Honda frictions if it was a straight fight, but £125 against £55 swung it the way of the EBC kit and at the moment its fine although clutch feel isnt quite as good. My springs are actually uprated Blackbird ones and give a noticably firmer pedal than standard Honda springs. They are the same length / width as blade ones but slightly stronger than the uprated blade ones they sell (I can only assume the cable ratio makes them a bit TOO stiff in the blade when on the bike, hence the slightly softer ones for upraded blade use). Are you sure yours are busa ones because Baz eyed his up for me when I was looking at options and from what I recall they were hugely different in size / diameter so wouldnt fit a standard clutch basket inner. Chris Quote
mb893 Posted June 24, 2004 Posted June 24, 2004 Well, Jack says thet are the same ones that where in his 500hp Busa, so I assumed.... They are 40mm long same'ish diameter overall but the material used is about twice the thickness of any of the 'uprated' springs I've seen so far. Quote
Al Yupright Posted June 24, 2004 Posted June 24, 2004 Be interesting to strip it down after a bit and see if the washers that hold the springs in are bent Quote
ChrisG Posted June 27, 2004 Posted June 27, 2004 Fair enough, I'll measure up one of mine and ask Baz if he still has the standard busa measurements too just for comparison. Chris Quote

Numptie Posted July 6, 2004 Author Posted July 6, 2004 OK, first things first. Thanks so much for all the replies. It's been really helpful. So, I have to admit that synth oil did find it's way into the engine ... in circumstances I won't go into here I changed the oil but no improvement. I've now had all the plates out, bathed them in white spirit, dried them and put them back. I've had a micrometer on the friction plates and they're still well within service limits. Spring length also seems to be fine. Fingers crossed, that'll do it. I'm afraid I can't check it out 'cos the local Honda dealer doesn't have a cover gasket in stock. I've ordered a new set of friction plates anyway. Cheers, N Quote
