16v electronic vs 8v dissy

Still a little confused about this one, not being electronically inclined!

I have the 16V dissy coil etc that came from the Calibra, but to get a spark i need either to get my hands on an 8V dissy, or buy a mappable ignition system.

Anyone able to explain what the problem is with the original 16V dissy?

It doesnt have any bobweights in the dizzy to give mechancial advance as the engine speed increases, so the timing would be constant. Also, it cannot be adjusted (no slots).
