Stuart Posted June 15, 2004 Posted June 15, 2004 Funnily enough I read a diesel comparison review from What Car whilst waiting for my 320D to be serviced this morning. Said that the contract cost of a 320D ES is less than the Saab 93 2.2 diesel because it depreciates much less and also comes with free servicing. S'pose it depends how much flexibility you have, but I think it said it lists at £20,995 with £1100 worth of free servicing. Fantastic engine and a pretty good car to drive. Worth a look? Quote
markcoopers Posted June 15, 2004 Posted June 15, 2004 Looked at the Saab 93 2.2, but the emissions resulted in 20%tax. This made it more expensive in personal taxation terms than the higher priced Audis and BMW's. Eventually chose the 320D BMW..............and all the flak that goes with it. Honda Accord has apparently the class leading Diesel engine at the moment??? Also agree that the S40 might be worth a look. Or you could just say sod it and get the RX8 and flaunt the 4 doors and seats rules? Quote
studbuckle Posted June 16, 2004 Author Posted June 16, 2004 All good comments, thanks. Time to get the test drives booked I think Quote
chrisbin Posted June 16, 2004 Posted June 16, 2004 Think I'd be looking at the Accord and Volvo. Don't forget with the Volvo you may have option of going for a bifuel and still be tax efficient. What about an X Type Jag....?? No idea on specific pricing/performance available but I think there'd be something in your range... Flat cap and pipe ready??? Quote

Flat cap and pipe ready??? Mondeo in Jag clothes.... doesn't feel right and if the Mondeo wasn't punchy enough, something heavier isnt going to be Quote

Mondeo in Jag clothes.... doesn't feel right and if the Mondeo wasn't punchy enough, something heavier isnt going to be I'm inclined to agree myself, but they've been quite well written up. Dunno about weight...? I know Chris Elworthy likes his, but then its not the diseasel.... Just another thought - re. the 3 series BM, the 318i is good on emmissions with reasonable performance, but I guess not punchy enough.....?? Quote
P W Posted June 16, 2004 Posted June 16, 2004 Hi Simon - I'm sure the saab 93 sport is having a new 1.9 td engine launched soon which will replace the 2.2 vx tractor unit I've got a 93 sport 2.ot vector at the moment, decent enough although have had trouble with alarm / central locking - may be worth considering with new / better td engine? Honda accords are well specced and 'relatively' cheap Quote
david.c Posted June 16, 2004 Posted June 16, 2004 Or you could just say sod it and get the RX8 and flaunt the 4 doors and seats rules? The RX8 does have 4 seats and doors.............but it's not diesel.........and it is horrendous on the tax front My brother has just got one...........cool looking car though David Quote
Stuart Posted June 16, 2004 Posted June 16, 2004 Jag was in same comparison report in What Car - 320D, X-type, A4 and Saab. Jag came out quite well. Quote
nlash Posted June 16, 2004 Posted June 16, 2004 As said before, try a Mazda 6 This will be my next c/car and have had a test drive, was quite impressed. Quote
studbuckle Posted June 16, 2004 Author Posted June 16, 2004 I found the Mazda 6 to be an OK car but it was coarse an unrefined in a diesel and didn't like the ramps at Meadowhall shopping centre Quote
ChrisG Posted June 16, 2004 Posted June 16, 2004 If I had the choice Id go for the 150 Leon or probably the Golf 140 if it didnt cost too much more in tax. I went from a Leon Cupra to a PD Bora and the Leon was much more fun to drive, even my girlfriend's 110 TDi SE Leon handles noticably better than the Bora, which is a bit of a boat in the handling stakes. studbuckle Posted July 16, 2004 Author Posted July 16, 2004 BTT, My choices now look like this: Bora TDi Highline + Cruise + Winter pack + Climate + Sports Suspension(this lacks CD autochanger but can probably rescue my current one) or Bora TDi Sport + Cruise (this doesn't have the leather and parking sensors and can't afford winter pack) or New Octavia, spec TBC when we get the contract rates through but should be as good as Bora Highline or Old Octavia estate L&K (top of the range only thing not available is the equiv of Rain pack on Bora) Quote
david.c Posted July 16, 2004 Posted July 16, 2004 Rain pack on Bora Do you get a free brolley David Quote
TrevP Posted July 16, 2004 Posted July 16, 2004 i've got a 2ltr tdci mondeo ghia x and i love it.its got low CO2 emissions, comfortable, has a huge boot, handles really well and is as fast as the petrol equivalent.last year on top gear they put up against bmw, mercs audi etc and it was the fastest round the track by 2 seconds.
