JonnyBoy Posted May 20, 2003 Posted May 20, 2003 when i try to open attatchments in Outlook express the files are greyed out. It says OE has removed access to the following unsafe attatchments.... how do i get them? I cant find any options anywhere. Could this be part of AVG?? h e l p Quote
minghis Posted May 20, 2003 Posted May 20, 2003 Spooky - I have exactly the same thing! I've just posted this problem on a technical forum, if I get any replies I'll let you know. Minghis. Quote
JonnyBoy Posted May 20, 2003 Author Posted May 20, 2003 cheers minghis.. another problem for you all now.... i have my dads old Toshiba laptop so that i can interface my major project prototype with it for evaluation and assesment..however, the Griffin Technology control knob that i am using requires 98SE, the laptop has 98 and I cant simply upgrade off the CD for 'licence reasons'. With Branded PC's, how do you go about putting a new O/S on? I have the rescue disks, but from past experiences with nasty branded machines, these disks automatically put the O/S on for you. Any suggestions as to how I go about putting 98SE on, or even how I can de-licence the current install so I can upgrade (I had to do something similar to XP recently to install SP1) Thanks in advance Quote
Hanslow Posted May 20, 2003 Posted May 20, 2003 Gents, Have you tried checking the security options? Go to the Tools menu, then select options. Select the Security tab and see if you have the 'Do not allow attachments to be saved or opened that could potentially be a virus' selected. If you have, de-select it. That might be it. Quote

Tried that, it still won't allow me to see attachments already received, all I need now is someone to send me an attachment to see if it sorts itself after making the change you suggested... Thanks, Minghis Quote
Hanslow Posted May 20, 2003 Posted May 20, 2003 You have mail chap. Mail me back and I will try and email you a text file as an attachment. Or you could always try emailing an attachment to yourself both before and after making the change to make sure you have fixed the problem (if it works). Quote
Hanslow Posted May 20, 2003 Posted May 20, 2003 Another thing to check (if this doesn't work) is that you haven't got a firewall that is automatically quarintining everything in case it might be nasty. Quote
JonnyBoy Posted May 20, 2003 Author Posted May 20, 2003 it may well be....and it is.. nice one. interesting that I have never had a problem before and never had to adjust outlook security settings...must have been an AVG script i guess. Minghis...i had to reboot OE to effect the changes! Quote
Jon Murray Posted May 21, 2003 Posted May 21, 2003 Outlook 2002 automatically removes file attachments such as .exe, .bat, etc. Anything it regards as an executable file. There is no way to stop it doing this that I am aware of. The way around it, if you want to send executable files (.exe's) is to compress them with PKZIP first. Outlook has no problem with ZIPped files. Jon Quote
Nick A Posted May 21, 2003 Posted May 21, 2003 The way Hanslow has described worked for me did it monthes ago after a service pack stopped mine from working Quote
