DMS Posted May 12, 2003 Posted May 12, 2003 The wife's bored of her estate tin top and is looking for something a bit more exciting to compliment it. She's too frightened of driving any of my machines (driving a Westie at anything over 20mph scares here sh1tless) so this is going to involve extra expense The list I've come up with is as follows: Alfa Romeo Spider Audi TT Audi A4 convertible BMW M3 convertible BMW Z4 Honda S2000 Lexus SC430 Lotus Elise Marcos TS250 Mazda hairdresser thing Mercedes CLK Mercedes SLK cabriolet MG TF Porsche Boxter Saab 9-3 convertible Vauxhall VX220 Volvo C70 TVRs have come off the list as she finds my SEiGHT pedals hard work So, what would everyone recommend. So far, she thinks the Marcos looks nicest followed closely by Elsie (sic). Quote
chrisbin Posted May 12, 2003 Posted May 12, 2003 Any more details on important criteria...... how many seats? how much - to buy and to run? handling important, or not? Since its to be your wife's choice......is this anything more than academic exercise.....?!!!! Quote
DMS Posted May 12, 2003 Author Posted May 12, 2003 Chris Important things for her are 2 seats only and as short as possible. Important things for me are cheap to repair/respray It has to be sporty - for the woman who found an RS6 "a little boring". It could also be that we move house soon such that the "stable" will have to go into secure storage whilst everything gets sorted leaving an estate, whatever she chooses from the below and one of my selection. Hence, I may have to drive it sometimes so it must definitely not have any *snip snip* connotations and be quite fun. As to it being her choice, well, that's what she will be made to think, anyway Quote
chrisbin Posted May 12, 2003 Posted May 12, 2003 OK then, I reckon that the ones to discount are: Alfa - looks great but thats about it... Audi - see above Lexus - doesn't even look good, unless you're into boats.... Mazda - why not new RX-8 ?? Mercs - only if they've got the right (big) engine MG - ................its got a c******m engine.... Saab - new model coming soon, old model is boring Volvo C70 - much as I like my S60, I don't think this will answer req'ts.. Which leaves... Porsche Boxster is great & does everything well. Only problem is that its a Porsche and there are too many of them around now! Elsie/VX220 - don't think your other half would live with either of these, and given you have the Westy's do you need either ? Marcos.......hmmmm.........you'd be a brave man............ Honda is nice, cracking engine, good looks Z4 looks different, and new, although will soon be common as muck... TT is capable - a bit "designer". Could be "chipped" for even more fun.... M3 convertible...........yep......that'd be the one for me..... Even though I'm not a Beemer fan in general, this is the business. Bonus of 4 seats too. Quote
Bananaman Posted May 12, 2003 Posted May 12, 2003 Alfa Romeo Spider 4/10 Audi TT 7/10 Audi A4 convertible 6/10 BMW M3 convertible 10/10 BMW Z4 8/10 Honda S2000 8/10 Lexus SC430 2/10 Lotus Elise 6/10 Marcos TS250 3/10 Mazda hairdresser thing 5/10 Mercedes CLK 6/10 Mercedes SLK cabriolet 7/10 MG TF 4/10 Porsche Boxter 10/10 Saab 9-3 convertible 4/10 Vauxhall VX220 7/10 Volvo C70 Volvo Well thats my 2'pene'th. catflap Posted May 12, 2003 Posted May 12, 2003 new mini C seems to have good reviews, very fun to drive, if she thinks a RS6 is boring lOl it may not be the speed thing she’s after, possible more about an involving drive?? Never driven one myself so don’t know what they are like Just a thought Quote
DMS Posted May 12, 2003 Author Posted May 12, 2003 Hmmm. The Marcos would be a laugh for at least 10 miles - right up to the point it seizes up and starts falling apart I'm a bit torn between the TT (only because it's going to get a nice new 3.2 engine shortly), the Boxter and the M3. The problem with the TT is that it looks a bit, err, bulbous to me, far too reminiscent of those horrible, horrible Beetles (I've been reading a book entitled "How to lose friends and alienate people", by the way). Wifey is unikely to go for a Porker although its probably the best all rounder. She's in a "avoid the kids" mode at the moment so the 4 seated M3 is probably out. So it's got me. Quote
chrisbin Posted May 12, 2003 Posted May 12, 2003 Nissan 350Z..... Yeah I know its a Nissan.......but it looks good, goes well and only 2 seats........ Quote
Jon Murray Posted May 12, 2003 Posted May 12, 2003 I fail to see how we can help you with this, the cars you have listed are priced anywhere between £15K (for the basic MX-5) and £51K (for the Lexus) - the price difference is huuuuuge! If you were asking "what's the best 2 seater sports car under £25K ?" then maybe we could help In any case, how about a second hand Noble M12, or a second hand Honda NSX ? Or what about the Jensen SV8 2 seater roadster (only 37 will ever be built, 21 already built by Jensen before going bust (again), 16 to be built on behalf of the receivers by Jensen employees) - 325bhp Ford V8, aluminium bodied, £39K - very exclusive, although spare parts are only being offered by Jensen for a period of five years. steve wilson Posted May 12, 2003 Posted May 12, 2003 Didnt yousee 5th gear or Top gear this week. They were talking about this subject ( 2 seater sports cars ). They compared most that are on the market and the Porche Boxter came out top. Best re-sale, most reliable ect. Quote
Blatman Posted May 12, 2003 Posted May 12, 2003 how about a second hand Noble M12, or a second hand Honda NSX ? Best two suggestions so far. Stop reading....... Quote
jim Posted May 12, 2003 Posted May 12, 2003 S2000 is a cracker IMHO, gets a bit noisy on long journeys with the hood up but a small price to pay I think. Not too many around and good fun to drive – sensible price as well. Gets my vote Quote
Mark Stanton Posted May 12, 2003 Posted May 12, 2003 Anything except an MG which is just an updated open top Metro (IMHO) and they're the hairdressers from #### car Quote
