lol...I'm not having mine weighed to prove any points (lardy seats, long range tank, carpets, heater, screen etc. aren't gonna make it light), just interested as to what it weighs, that's all.

What is made differently? I would like to know how to make these things lighter, especially the engine mounts?

Plumbing - welded aluminium tubing is about the lightest I can figure out?

Ancillaries - small generator, tb's, what else can be made lighter?

It would be nice if you could share so we all can learn, instead of keeping it to yourself, isn't this in the spirit of the forum and the WSCC? If you've figured something good out, I believe many others really would like to know so we all can improve and make our cars better.

Thanks in advance!

Mike, these are my opinions here of which are facts observed by my own eyes and experiences. I am unable to post data sheets of the materials used. I believe (but please tell if I am wrong) the Duratec 2L is the lightest CEC engine, Westfield factory fit into a Westfield, I am not comparing to K series as thats not factory stuff. My Duratec engine has bespoke engine mounts that are steel (Caterham copy), better design thus much smaller and lighter than the Westfield factory car. Prop shaft is bespoke (Caterham copy) completely different than the Westfield one, it is very short and much lighter than that supplied by Westfield. The gearbox mounting plate on my SEIW chassis has been removed and a bespoke stainless steel one manufactured as a minimum requirement to allow the T9 box to be located well back. As a result no gearlever extension required. Some engine mounting bracketry removed on the chassis to accomodate the (Caterham copy) mountings. My Duratec engine has much aluminium material removed from the head, block and end plate, thus a weight saving not undertaken by Westfield. My exhaust 4-2-1 downpipe setup is bespoke thus as short as possible allowing a large 7" SS silencer which is surprisingly light, This is completely different to the Westfield set up. However I cannot comment on whether it is any lighter than the Westfield type. My alternator is tiny and weighs b******* all, the brackets are bespoke and made from steel and nylon, completely different than any other Westfield set up you would have seen. As a result of the alternator set up, the pulley adjuster is manufactured from nylon (but it does have steel ball bearings) and on the same side (near) as everything else keeping pulley arrangement to a complete minimum, completely different to the Westfield set up. Light weight alloy clutch actuator, AP racing clutch cylinder, heavy duty AP racing clutch, ultralite flywheel, 4.5kg battery, Raceline TB's yes made of standard alloy, Pipercross air filter yes alloy and foam, waterrail resulting in minimal plumbing and reduction in H2O thus weight saving, the starter motor is 50% aluminium the remainder steel copper and PVC,although this is a standard ford part it is surprisingly light. Fuel rail is steel and fuel regulator is aluminium/steel. I hope this helps and although it is not F1 answers your question. If not I am sorry I cannot help.

Blatman, although I have a memory of a goldfish I can remember that I stated my car weighed 500kg, thats because that is what the data sheet states it at corner weights. Why don't you believe me when I say it has been weighed   ???

I can also remember stating that I could not believe it as I expected it to weigh 550kg, but as stated before I have no other (currently) information to go on. But, yes with my hand on my heart I think it weighs around 520kg, why should I be criticised for saying that goodness me. Is there a law for having differing opinions then? or just on here?

If you all want to camp outside my house to wait for a date that I can meet then thats up to you, but if any old TURKEY feels it fair to state that, then it's never gonna happen is it. I cannot and I mean cannot just meet any old date put up which also includes 160 miles drive just so you lot can hopefully take the p*** out of me and my car. It's also not fair to imply it aint gonna happen because I cannot meet the first date that comes out of your head which happens to meet your lots critera. Anyway, this event is gonna be one hell of a party aint it, I'll make sure I've got my party hat.

Would any of the interested parties object if I took it to Freestyle for it to be weighed, they know a bit about weighing Sevens and they aint to far from me. Don't know why I am bothering really because if I am right it doesn't look like anyone's gonna accept it ???

Actually, according to a later posting by you in the aforementioned thread:

.......would like to point out that when this car was corner weighted I expected to be told it weighed 540kg, but it come in at 508kg, since then it has a bit of a diet which is were I get this figure of 500kg.

So you agree that you've never actually seen your car on a set of scales with a reading of 500Kg's being displayed?

It's not criticising, it a question of accuracy of reporting. In your own words, we now have 4 different weights (550, 540, 508, and 500Kg's), one of which *might* be correct, but is over the 500Kg's you claimed. It seems to me that by your own admission, the 500Kg claim is just that, an un-verified claim. All we are saying is that we'd like to see it verified. We'd all be well chuffed if it did come out at 500Kg's, so don't go thinking this is some sort of witch hunt, 'cos it isn't. Trust me we'll all be sticking 2 fingers up at C******m if indeed a 500Kg/250bhp Westfield becomes a relatively easily attainable goal :t-up:

Hope this comes out, this maybe of interest to Blatman

The reason I posted 500kg as the day after this corner weighting was done I changed the battery to a Red Top 15, which was about 7kg weight saving, so my calcs showed a figure of 501.4kg. It has since shed another 5kg, but that is another story.

My next post will be the result of another corner weight, hopefully next week.

Right come on you lot. 15 pages is enough. Mr conibear has a light WF as anything in the 5-550KG bracket is. Lets no get too worried about the detail and getting into slanging match over the whole thing.

The idea of a weigh in at curborough is just to get some interesting comparisons of different vehicles. I'll try to note down some specs with the weights etc.

I rekon without driver, My car will be one of the lighter ones, but I reckon the lightest CEC Speed Series car is Del Boys (especially if we add driver mass) and the lightest BEC is probably Barneys (if we ignore driver mass :p  )

It will be nice if we get loads of different spec cars.

Oh and the scales are in cal and will be laser leveled.

Conibear (Ian) - thanks for the details. Makes things very clear what parts are probably different.

I agree that Westfield motor mounts are surprisingly over engineered (and thus heavy). Every little bit saved here and there add to a nice total, it seems.

When you've all done your weighing, I suppose a huge write-up with specs and weights in tables and one or two pics of the cars is in order? And we want the corner weights, not just the total.  :xmas:

Hey, I can't be held responsible for 'operator error' :)
