mud Posted May 17, 2004 Posted May 17, 2004 very good quality workmanship but only does mild steel.simpson race exhausts, slough are the boys if you want stainless £900 i have been quoted.its on it's way Quote
DickieB Posted May 17, 2004 Posted May 17, 2004 Sent Tony Law a cheque last Wed. Manifold arrived today Top job too. Rolling road session next week, and job's a good 'un. Quote
Paul S Posted May 19, 2004 Posted May 19, 2004 I got Tony Law to make a manifold/silencer for my car (widebody, XE). It's a thing of great beauty, and fits perfectly. 4 years ago, it cost about £320. This pic (above) was taken with the protective paint Tony Law applies. However, as previously mentioned, they only do mild steel, not stainless, so it needs proper coating/painting. I had mine cermakromed by Camcoat in Warrington. The pic above shows the Cermakrome finish. It can be polished up to look just like chrome. It looked fabulous until the beginning of last year, when it started to peel off. You'd expect that where it gets sandblasted by the front wheel, but it also started to peel off the manifold inside the engine bay. It looks like it can't cope with exhaust heat I'm just about to repaint it with Plasti-Kote Heat Shield which has stood up really well on a friend's bike exhaust, and at only £7.50 a can it's much cheaper than Camcoat's £180. In summary, Tony Law = fabulous quality at a great price. Cermakrome = not really worth it (IMO/IME) Cheers Paul Quote
DickieB Posted May 19, 2004 Posted May 19, 2004 Paul S Are you saying that the Tony Law coating is not sufficient? Do I need to put anything else on top of it prior to fitting it (which I was going to do this afternoon, but will wait until you reply now!!!! ) In terms of "looks", the Tony Law covering is fine for my car - shiny chrome would look way out of place! Thanks Dickie B Quote
scott beeland Posted May 19, 2004 Posted May 19, 2004 Plastikote will be next to try on mine. Whatever Tony Law uses drops off at 1st sign of water......and VHT paint is worse Not paying camcoat sort of cash to have it fall off inside a year though Quote
Blatman Posted May 19, 2004 Posted May 19, 2004 Hmmmmmmmm, my green car has Camcoated (black) exhausts, and whilst it's faded a bit, and is a bit marked where I have been less than careful when getting the bonnet off and on , it's in perfect nick. I reckon I've done around 5-8000 miles since it was done, including Le Mans (sand blasting in the campsites), as well as the usual collection of crap roads with loose stones/roadworks etc, and the odd trip in the wet. I'd not hesitate to reccommend Camcoat, at least in the black flavour.... Quote
scott beeland Posted May 19, 2004 Posted May 19, 2004 Still seems a bit steep if it happens to only last the year though (Opinions differ among people I've spoken too.) The £100+ charge buys an awful lot of plastikote though Quote

mark.anson Posted May 19, 2004 Author Posted May 19, 2004 I notice in Pauls post that he has a body exit exhaust.I didnt know Tony Law did this type as ive only seen the bonnet exit type. I want to fit a bonnet exit type, but as my wiring loom runs around the left side of the engine bay, I am a bit concerned that the heat will affect it. Is this an issue or is there sufficient room for it not to be a problem. Mark. PS thanks for the replys so far. Quote
Blatman Posted May 19, 2004 Posted May 19, 2004 Shielding the loom from heat is pretty easy. I can't remember where my loom runs on my Vx, but there isn't much on the (bonnet exit) exhaust side as my alternator is on the inlet side...... Quote
timd Posted May 19, 2004 Posted May 19, 2004 If it helps, this lot was made by Tony Law, and a top job he did too. It isn't camcoated but has some sort of sprayed on aluminium coating on top of the mild steel. This is used a lot on historic stuff I believe and GT40 type stuff in particular. When you get it back the surface is very rough and almost white in colour, like this: You can polish this coating up to look almost like chrome (well, more like polished ally really! ) in that picture you can see where I test polished a short part of one of the rear engine manifold branches where it enters the collector. One advantage (?) of this coating is that it doesn't discolour with heat. It also appears to be very long lasting and hard wearing. HTH! Quote
