Silicone sealant remover?

Recommended Posts

I have googled this and had mixed reviews and techniques. Any personal experience of what to safely use on the gel coat to remove sealant under the windscreen on the scuttle panel?

I've used isopropyl alcohol on mine when I removed the white mastic stuff someone used to glue the vinyl covers that fit over the side as you get in.

It took loads of rubbing and scraping with a soft plastic scraper, but got there in the end. Didn't damage the paint either. No idea of it will soften up silicone though???

WD40 works well. If you can get it on a cloth and let it soak for a few minutes, then use a soft plastic scraper of some description (or a thumb nail) it should come off easily enough.

Meths did a good job on our shower trays recently

Try turps, or WD40. Turps on a rag and use your thumb nail to rub it off.

Exactly this. Done it many times.

Try heating it with a hair dryer 1st, that may help no matter which method you use.

You might laugh at this.. But I've got or had... a nice expensive pair of ear phones that have a silicone covered volume/on/off control built in.

Not the first time it's happened, but I've realised sun tan lotion, manages to destroy silicone very well! It goes all very soft and falls apart. So theres an option... probably a bit expensive though 😆

Man gets arrested when caught rubbing suntan lotion into his car and whispering sweet nothings into its wing mirrors 😂

DON'T   You may get rid of the silicone but you will never get rid of the white smears of sun tan lotion on the paint/gel coat. My ex wife insisted on covering herself and our son before going out , Three cars paintwork was ruined where they touched the car  . I tried all sorts of solvents to remove it and it looked gone and then came back a few days later .

OT but never touch anything painted, plastic or similar after using an insect repellent with DEET in it.  It's a better solvent than Acetone.

Not good on leather seats either. Ask me how I know 😕

Sun tan lotion is nasy stuff! Apart from stopping sun burn.

Never thought we'd ever see a thread on a motoring forum on Sun Tan lotion 😆
