Euro breakdown cover

A mate with a Westy says that the AA won’t cover his car for our euro tour to Spain because it’s Q reg and the insurance broker won’t offer it because of the car’s age.

Any suggestions?

Ditto.

I have used the AA for Euro cover in the past on the (none Q plate) Mega S2000, and it was horrific. But I’d already renewed UK recovery with the AA and was kind of boxed in. The Euro bolt on was an addition to the normal AA fee, and the bolt on alone, for one trip to Le Mans, was double the price of the then A Plan’s complete insurance and recovery package for a year.

I cancelled my AA membership shortly after returning. Never used them since.

Same here but as I said, his broker won’t offer it.

I have a similar situation with my campervan..  AA for instance I have cover with though my nationwide bank account but the small print limits it to max 16 years and un-modified vehicles for European cover..  So a Q plate kit car would defo be not covered.   Your main insurance might offer offer something like green flag  as an add on  or free, but I’d want to read their small print before believing I was covered..   I did a few online searches prior to doing 1200 miles in France a few weeks back in the camper and no one would cover a 36 year old modified van so I have risked it for the last few years… I’ve a big hammer and a lot of critical spares ..   and would find a way!  But it would be nice for next year to have some cover as peace of mind..

Maybe, but my mate isn’t with Howden.

Edit: I just asked if his renewal is due soon and thus maybe worth exploring other avenues.

Edit 2: recently renewed and avenues already explored without success

No judgement, but is:

recently renewed and avenues already explored without success

is this code for he had a quote from, or spoke to Howden, and didn't want to use them - just trying to shortcut the inevitable!

When i was with AIB on the Sigma, I had third party (UK) breakdown, but I do remember getting a quote on Euro breakdown from the same company. In practice, it would have been more cost effective to end my cover early and swap to Howdens.

So, just looked back through my records.

AutoAid were the UK breakdown company I used; this is UK only cover, they then offered Euro cover through their sister company, EuroRescue. I don't know if you can purchase the EuroRescue cover on it's own, while being an A member, but might be worth looking into.

@Kingster The company that provide the breakdown cover under the Howden policy is AXA assistance, maybe worth trying them 👍🏼

I tried using my AA cover provided by Nationwide summer 2024 when I cracked my sump on ‘the long way north’ Westie weekend. As soon as I told them it was an accident, rather than a breakdown they lost what interest they had in recovering the car. After a long conversation they offered to recover the car, which was around 100 miles from my home for a cost of approx £850. I was told Ali and me would have to make our own way home. I wouldn’t touch the AA with my barge pole now. They were happy to leave me and Ali and the car on top of a mountain, in the wind, nothing but an ice cream van for company. All our Westie ‘friends’ having deserted us…Anyway. I rang Howdens, they sorted car and us out, despite not having any recovery plan with them. Absolutely brilliant company and 4 months later my insurance premium went up by £8.
