karlgurney Posted April 28, 2004 Posted April 28, 2004 Cheers for all the congrats on me passing first time, next is registration, on Tuesday i went down to the DVLA office in Oxford and handed all my forms in, they then gave me a date for inspection, Bicester on tues 4th May. Not a problem untill i read the form, It states i'm not legally allowed to drive the car there, i phoned them and they confirmed this, apparently i have to trailer it there or wait weeks for a inspector to come to me! Am i right that other people have driven there cars to the dvla inspection without a problem. How do i stand legally with this? Karl Quote
adhawkins Posted April 29, 2004 Posted April 29, 2004 I thought that as long as you had written confirmation of the appointment you could drive it there (in the same way that you're allowed to drive a car that has no MOT to a pre-booked appointment for an MOT test). However, your paperwork certainly seems to suggest otherwise... Andy Quote
ROC Posted April 29, 2004 Posted April 29, 2004 Karl, I trailered mine the first time only to be told the inspector was off sick, drove it the second time, nothing was mentioned by anyone and our centre is behind a police station! Rich. Quote
neilwillis Posted April 29, 2004 Posted April 29, 2004 If the form says you're not allowed to drive it there, I'd go with that. However, in Birmingham I was told that as long as i had a bona fide appointment - with written proof - I was allowed to drive to the inspection, as long as all the other paperwork was in order, and I had insurance cover. Steve R Posted April 29, 2004 Posted April 29, 2004 Birmingham told me that it was most definitely illegal for me to drive to the appointment. She even went away to double check her facts. However... after much pleading (I don't have a trailer or towcar) they admitted that the system was a farce and managed to bend the rules as a one-off. The car was basically registered and taxed without being inspected to enable me to legally drive it to the inspection. They would not issue the V5 until I had got the car inspected, which is fair enough, but it was enough for me to be able to get plates made up and drive it to the inspection without the cost of trailer/towcar hire. May be worth making a nuiscance of yourself like I did! Got to be worth a try... Steve. Quote
karlgurney Posted April 29, 2004 Author Posted April 29, 2004 I did pleed with them but they basically said its up to you but the law doesn't allow it mmm not risking it since i've got this far, I've paid my registration and tax fee but they didn't give me any tax or plates? I've got a trailer organised just need to try and find a mate with a tow car that can tow it for me (don't have towing on my civvy liscense but i'm allowed to tow RAF tornados on my RAF one ) otherwise i'll be waiting for the dvla inspector to find a conveinient date in his diary to come out to me. How bl**** frustration can it get Karl Quote
Tigger Posted April 29, 2004 Posted April 29, 2004 I called up the DVLA and said I was having my SVA in 3 days. They asked me to take the car to the centre for an inspection on the same day - it was only 2 miles around the corner though. No mention of it being illegal Tigger Quote

Blatman Posted April 30, 2004 Posted April 30, 2004 I think you might if you passed your test after 1996 or something.............more Government mollycoddling........ The same applies fro driving 7.5 tonners and mini-buses over a certain number of passengers. If you have a post 1996 licence, you need to take extra tests to be able to drive those vehicles. Daft IMO, but I guess it keeps Quango and committee sitting politicians in a job........ Quote
adhawkins Posted April 30, 2004 Posted April 30, 2004 Never heard of it! I'm sure you're right though. So what, you have to go and sit a special test before you're allowed to tow a trailer? Presumably it says somewhere on the license that you're not allowed to tow a trailer? I wonder how many people know about this? Andy Quote
Enterpryse Posted April 30, 2004 Posted April 30, 2004 This is beginning to confuse the hell out of me. Westfield say that they provide the built up vehicle report along with the SVA cert and donor V5 and V55, it all goes to DVLA and bobs your uncle. ie no further inspection. Could this be because mine is a single donor vehicle and all the major parts are from the one source and therefore don't need it. Quote
karlgurney Posted April 30, 2004 Author Posted April 30, 2004 I think if you passed your test after jan/feb 1997 then your the only ones affected (i passed march 97 Grr) Its all sorted now got a friend to tow us there on Tuesday for some beer chits About the inspection i assume that the DVLA have to check that the information you gave them on the V55/5 tallies up with the chassis/engine number on the car. Mark Purves Posted April 30, 2004 Posted April 30, 2004 Karl, What you are saying is I believe correct. You should be on the road by close of business on the 4th then. Do not forget to get in contact when you are road worthy to meet up. Quote
Chuckie Posted April 30, 2004 Posted April 30, 2004 Unbelievable ! I didn't realise there were any restrictions with regards to towing; but I guess it makes sense ( especially since I got my license before '97! ) More info can be found at Driver Licensing Requirements for Towing Trailers in Great Britain Andrew.
