adhawkins Posted April 23, 2004 Posted April 23, 2004 How tricky is the wire wool bit? I'm hoping the answer is 'not too much'. Was also hoping to be able to do it without removing the can from the car (cos the only place to do that is the collector, which is a b******* to get back on and sealed up), but it doesn't sound like that's gonne be possible really Andy Quote
pete g Posted April 23, 2004 Posted April 23, 2004 whenever i have done mine ,have only found about two inches of material left in the can. when refilling i try to get another piece of pipe of same diameter as exhaust, and wrap wire wool around this ,then remove it from this pipe and slip it down silencer pipe.then add the other material around this. hope this helps. it is easier off the car but can be done while on car. winker Posted April 23, 2004 Posted April 23, 2004 My Dunnell / Techcraft one has a central metal tube fastened at one end only. Since I repacked it it rattles at about 3K RPM. Taken the end off a few times & fiddled with the contents but to no avail. I too have a Tech-craft exhaust that rattles. Phoned the factory and they suggested applying silicon where the inner tubes join at the rear of the can. Bought and applied some Hammerite Instant Gasket, as I reckoned this would withstand relatively high temperatures. It worked.....for a hundred miles or so. Re-did it and it worked again, for a hundred miles or so... Don't know if the Hammerite simply 'melts' or just gets 'blown away'. At least (I think) I know what the cause of the rattle is - any suggestions as to what can be used instead of Instant Gasket? Quote
Blatman Posted April 23, 2004 Posted April 23, 2004 Weld a sleeve onto the endcap that fits snugly inside the perforated tube. It only needs to support the first inch or perforated tube, so it won't affect the performance of the exhaust or the car...... Quote
