Dracoro Posted April 23, 2004 Posted April 23, 2004 What does this involve? Not really intending to do it unless it's easy. The can is probably OK anyway but I like to know these things. SBD can on mine BTW. Quote
adhawkins Posted April 23, 2004 Posted April 23, 2004 There was a thread about Wunoff repacking on here recently. I've just received my 'repacking kit' from them, which consists of some wire wool and what looks like an old blanket I think just buying some exhaust packing stuff (Merlin sell it for example) and wire wool would do it. Put the wire wool around the central core, then the repacking material. Don't pack too tight, as apparently this lessens the noise reducing effect. Andy Quote
Arm Posted April 23, 2004 Posted April 23, 2004 The blanket material is E glass and seems to be the most popular. This is supplied by Merlin and Wunoff. The wire wool is in fact stainless wool (wire wool wont last as long) and the kit you have had from Wunoff probably contains stainless wool. I know some people get away with wire wool and loft insulation however my car eats that within a few laps. HTH Ash Quote

Man On The Clapham Omnibus Posted April 23, 2004 Posted April 23, 2004 Andy, does your Wunoff can rattle at some engine speeds? Mine does, at about 3.5k and it's annoying. I seem to recall reading a post on here about another make doing it. Quote
adhawkins Posted April 23, 2004 Posted April 23, 2004 Can't say I've noticed it to be honest. I think I may have one of the joints over-tightened though (the link pipe to silencer one). Perhaps that's what's rattling? Andy Quote
Man On The Clapham Omnibus Posted April 23, 2004 Posted April 23, 2004 Might be but I think it's the inner tube that runs the length of the can but is fixed only at one end. I seem to remember the other poster mentioning something about pinching it to tighten it against something? Still if yours is quiet, it must be possible for mine to be. I'll talk to Wunoff. Thanks, Andy Quote
Dracoro Posted April 23, 2004 Author Posted April 23, 2004 How easy is this job to do? Is it best to let a professional at it? Do I need 'special' tools/equipment/grease/stress-ball etc. Given the car has only done 3500 miles, is it unlikely that a repacking will make a difference. dB rating at the last surrey meet showed 101dB at a bit over 4500rpm and 98dB at 4000rpm IIRC. Chris.B Posted April 23, 2004 Posted April 23, 2004 does your Wunoff can rattle at some engine speeds? Twas I who posted a thread some time ago about re-packing a silencer. My Dunnell / Techcraft one has a central metal tube fastened at one end only. Since I repacked it it rattles at about 3K RPM. Taken the end off a few times & fiddled with the contents but to no avail. Can't test it right now as the ECU is back at at MBE for repair. Quote
adhawkins Posted April 23, 2004 Posted April 23, 2004 How easy is this job to do? Is it best to let a professional at it? Do I need 'special' tools/equipment/grease/stress-ball etc. According to the nice man at Wunoff, it's a doddle. However, I'll let you know after I've done mine! It's 'just' a matter of removing the end (allen bolts on mine I think), removing the old crap, putting wire wool and then blanket around, then refitting (the reverse of the above procedure, obviously ). Sounds a doddle Andy Quote
Terry Everall Posted April 23, 2004 Posted April 23, 2004 It might be a dodle but it is very messy!!!!!! Quote
adhawkins Posted April 23, 2004 Posted April 23, 2004 Messy in what way? I'll probably be doing mine next weekend, so any special precautions I should take? Andy Quote
Terry Everall Posted April 23, 2004 Posted April 23, 2004 The packing gets coated in black exhaust deposits so best to wear latex gloves and old clothes until old stuff removed. Also the packing is an irritant so covering hands and arms is good idea. Just pretend you are a southern softee and you will be ok Quote
adhawkins Posted April 23, 2004 Posted April 23, 2004 Just pretend you are a southern softee and you will be ok I'm an adopted one of them anyway Thanks for the advice. Andy Quote
Blatman Posted April 23, 2004 Posted April 23, 2004 Wear a mask, 'cos it's a really dusty job too....... I also posted a step by step guide on here somewhere too......... I lined my carbon can with some turbo blanket when I last re-packed it. It'll help stop it discolouring or catching fire as and when the packing starts to disappear and the carbon becomes exposed to hot exhaust gasses...... Quote
