Astrali Steering Wheel Boss

Recommended Posts

Posted

I've just got hold of a Mountney wheel mounted on an Astrali boss from a Mini. Is there any way of confirming it's of the collapsible variety? Are there any numbers or markings that should be present?

It is not particularly substantial and looks pretty collapsible to me!

Thanks

Perhaps I'm being a bit slow here - not having gone through all this latest SVA mullarkey  :D

Whats the point of having a collapsible steering wheel in an accident - would it mean that you'd end up being speared by your steering column  ???  ???  ???

Surely it would be safer to have a collapsible UJ somewhere down the column that would fail in the event of a substantial head-on moment ???

oh sorry Deller - I dunno  :p

Call astrali and quote the numbers on the back, they are very helpful. Probably if it is solid it wont if it has four ribs it will. Click here

Just an update...

I have spoken to Astrali and they have confirmed that all there boss's are collaspible. However they mentioned that none of them have been approved to SVA standard.  ???

I am right in thinking that the boss westfield supply is an Astrali boss. Could anyone tell me then number on the reverse of the Westfiled boss please.

cheers

The number on the boss is A4067 on the sierra astrali boss, there is no approval for it, the number they are looking for is A1524.

as mine failed sva last week on westfield hassles :arse:

only way around it is to stamp up your boss with A1524, or use the donors steering wheel which will pass.

hope that helps

they arent designed to shear or collapse right down, just collapse a bit to help absorb shock

Dont know if it helps but the astrali I had before i bought the Momo one i have now had A1524 stamped on it. This was a Rover Allegro fit

Thanks for the reply's. At least I know what number to look for now.

It will probably just be easier to borrow a wheel for the SVA. Perhaps from from one of my new friends I'll make at Stoneleigh in a couple of weeks!! ;)  :D  :D ..who's camping??

It looks crap but if you have the sierra steering column, then use the sierra donor steering wheel for the SVA, the approval on that hub A4067 will fail, as its not sva compliant. then swap for the westfield hub etc after the SVA
