Kingster Posted February 9 Posted February 9 Looking to hire a car for a holiday in Italy this June. The usual suspects like avis, budget, europcar are around £400-450 for a week. Comparison type sites all seem to effectively try and sell you additional insurance then you pay for the car at the airport. Coming in at under £250 for a mid sized car (although the “headline figure” is around £170 without the insurance). If you say you don’t want the insurance the inference is that you will then need to pay £20 a day to the hire company. All seems a bit suspicious to me - any experience to offer? Quote
Captain Colonial Posted February 9 Posted February 9 Whatever you hire, check the condition of the spare and take a photo of it before you set off from the airport. Quite a common hire company con to send you out with a flat or even no spare, then charge you for a replacement after you drop it back on the way home - which of course they do to the next one who hires it… Quote

Captain Colonial Posted February 9 Posted February 9 As far as companies go, either Zest Car Rental or Centauro, they’re both well rated. Avoid Goldcar like the plague. 1 Quote
Stuart Posted February 9 Posted February 9 There's lots of independent XS insurers out there that charge a lot less than £20 a day Try https://www.carhireexcess.co.uk/ or https://www.insurance4carhire.com/ 1 Quote
Nemesis Posted February 13 Posted February 13 No idea if 'Goldcar' operate there, but avoid them like the plague if they do. 1 Quote
Rhett Turner - Black Country AO Posted February 27 Posted February 27 I've used arguscarhire.com a few times, they are more of a comparison site that front various hire car companies. You can purchase insurance through them which I had to use last time, it was a bit of a pain but worked. (I had an AXA damage refund policy) I had a fiat 500 c when we visited Sicily end of May last year, supplied by SicilybyCar, had some additional damage, which I think was genuine, when I retuned it, no idea how it happened. Had to pay what seemed quite an excessive amount at the time, put claim in and recovered it. As others have said, take lots of pics of your car before accepting, if the worse does happen make sure you get copies of all docs signed, presented used, with invoices calculations etc so this can be included with your claim. Kenner Posted February 27 Posted February 27 Also make sure take pictures of underneath of the car like front back bumpers as like to charge you for damaged underneath too. heard story's of that before too if its non main brand car hire place. Quote

The 3rd party XS insurers usually cover you for underside, tyres etc. but the expensive 'in-house' ones usually don't. Latest thing in America is they try to convince you that you might not be fully covered if the car breaks down and want to sell you insurance for that. The 3rd party guys usually cover that too.
