Andrew Wood Posted February 5 Posted February 5 Hi. Be gentle! I have just bought a Toy Box Westfield. I have been out for a couple of runs round the country roads near me, but after half a mile my eyes were watering and I could hardly see! I know it’s cold, but I was so excited to have a first drive! So my question is.. Do you wear a bike helmet? Goggles? Just put the side doors on? Any advice would be very much appreciated! 2 Quote
Captain Colonial Posted February 5 Posted February 5 If you have a windscreen rather than an aero screen, you are suffering from a common ailment known as Westie Nose, which occurs at speeds over 50mph when side doors or wind deflectors are not installed. The air rushes around the windscreen and smacks you straight in the face, making breathing difficult. As mentioned, the two cures are using the doors or Perspex wind deflectors, which are very effective and less claustrophobic. 1 Quote
Paul Baker - Bristol Bath and Cotswold AO Posted February 5 Posted February 5 Congrats on buying your Westfield! As above, side doors or wind deflectors will help stop the wind buffeting and the subsequent tears. In winter though I do often drive with a helmet on, keeps you warm, but it is a personal preference thing as I know some don’t like the faf of a helmet 1 Quote
Andrzej Posted February 5 Posted February 5 Without windscreen helmet or googles. With windscreen nothing or just sunglasses . Also advice lexan side deflektors. 1 Quote
tex Posted February 6 Posted February 6 Use full size doors this time of year and half doors in summer 1 Quote
Stuart Davis AO - Devon Cornwall & Somerset Posted February 6 Posted February 6 I use half doors and Caterham wind deflectors in the winter. Together they are very effective at cutting down buffeting and ‘Westie Nose!’ Whilst still maintaining a very open feel. 1 Quote

Naranja_Al Posted February 6 Posted February 6 Welcome, lovely looking car 👌 I have a windscreen and side doors for winter driving. 1 Quote
kenton Posted February 6 Posted February 6 I thought you northerners were all tough? 😂 Just shy of 200 miles round trip to the MK open day last Saturday. Aeroscreen and no heater but I do have half doors and a heated jacket for when its below 8'. Once I'm on the road I get all the comfort I need from the V8 exhaust note. Kenton pic from warmer weather last year. Millau bridge 6 Quote

Just ordered a new Matt Black one. Thanks. I think this will work. 1 Quote
Euan Hoosearmy Posted February 9 Posted February 9 As I'm somewhat tall and lanky I don't use doors as I like to use the rear arch as an armrest. Car has wind deflectors. Always wear aviator type glasses retained with a strap. In winter I have a heat-holders "biggles" type hat that is lovely and warm but does make you look a bit of a wally. Have tried woolly hats but the turbulence can push them down over your eyes once you get to about 60mph... If it's chilly or I'm doing longer runs I'll often wear a windproof jacket as that stops my right shoulder going numb from the buffeting. Have worn a bike helmet for longest runs just to keep the noise down. Is absolutely fine for visibility. Just have to put a pad on the roll bar to save clattering the back of the helmet against it... 1 Quote
