All,

Just been reading all the old posts on what front callipers work and what I should buy to replace the standard discs on my SEiW,

It seems it’s AP all the way.. (and yes NO vented disks…) but what master cylinder size will I really need?

What parts “really” work well together..?

Not quite....

IMHO, the caliper choice is between CAT Motorsports offerings, or the Outlaw calipers offered by   Stuart Taylor Motorsport. Some will reccommend the calipers supplied by Hi Spec, but there are too many reports about iffy customer service that make me hesitate to reccommend them, and besides, I don't think that Hi Spec make a "direct fit" caliper, although I'll stand to be corrected...

You  may need to address the master cylinder too. It's just possible that the 4 pots won't work as well as they might if you keep the standard Westfield master cylinder, although opinions vary. I am firmly in the "fit the AP master cylinder" camp.......

Get discs from either CAT or from Fluke Motorsport.

Ahem......

Bremsport alloy 4 pot callipers fit without alteration and IMO worked fine with standard m/c and solid disc.

Ask Olli, he must have tried them out by now.

(not that I`m contradicting Blatman cos I never tried the AP one to see what improvement it made) :p

Bremsport calipers are made by Outlaw - they're identical save for the logos on them.

The reason they work with the standard master cylinder is that the piston sizes were designed to be the same (or really close to) the piston size in the Ford M16 calipers.

I now have some Outlaw calipers fitted to my car to replace the Wilwoods on there but I'm using the AP master cylinder too.  I'll get dad to give me a report on how they work once the pads have been bedded in a bit.

Thanks Al...... I couldn't be *sure* I'd seen them, and couldn't be bothered to do a search   :0:0:0

Just had a look at both the CAT motorsport calipers and the Stuart Taylor Outlaw ones on the respective sites.

Any comments on quality, performance etc on both make from those of you who have them fitted, or seen them in the flesh.

I like the look of both and I think the outlaws are a tad cheaper, but id rather have the quality items.

I recently bought some Outlaw calipers and I must say I was impressed with the quality.  They are billet CNCed aluminium and all of the cross-overs are internal and all of the joints are clean and neat.  They "feel" better quality than my cast Wilwood Dynalites (which were good calipers as well, just didn't look quite so tidy).

Unfortunately I've not seen any Cat Motorsport calipers in the flesh so I can't compare the two.  I'd expect them to be good quality too though - in the pictures they look very neat and tidy.

The only obvious differences are that the Cat ones have 4 bleed nippes as opposed to two and the outlaws use a bolt to retain the pads rather than a split pin (though the pads are free to rattle about - the bolt just stops them falling out the back).

Just ordered some new Wilwood Midilites (Cast Alloy) along with 285 x 21 discs - I run 17 inch wheels which I'm not changing (yet)

I looked at all the others (CAT, Bremsport, Outlaw et all) but very few appeared to have much in the way of support between the callipers (I think the Bremsport ones have a bolt across the middle).

If you think about the forces involved, some of the billet callipers look like they could distort (and basically give a spongy feeling) without some form of tie or at least a beefier body.

Dunno - I guess it's all down to preference, cost, looks, etc etc

The new Wilwood Midilites from Rally Design are a good price compared to everything else but I'm sure it's each to their own.

Errr, the Cat Motorsport and Bremsport / Outlaw calipers both have 4 sodding great bolts clamping them together....

They look quite similar to the Wilwood Midlites to me in that respect.

I seriously doubt caliper flex will be an issue with billet calipers any more than it would be with cast, radially mounted ones.

I've had the CAT ones in my hands on a couple of occasions, and as Nick says, they are quality items, no question. If you can wait, Stoneleigh is only a couple of weeks away. I'm *sure* CAT will have a stand inside the WSCC marquee with all their goody bits on display (ooeerr).

Stuart Taylor may well have a stand at Stoneleigh somewhere too. Why not give 'em a ring to see........
