YouMustBeJoking Posted April 4, 2004 Posted April 4, 2004 In an idle moment I was looking through the list of attendees at the Bookatrack Goodwood trackday on Tuesday 20 April and was surprised to see Holly Bond from Kings Winford listed in the advanced session. It seems rather a long way to go for a day out. Perhaps Westfield are planning to show off something exciting to us southerners. Rides/drives for potential customers a possibility Quote
YouMustBeJoking Posted April 5, 2004 Author Posted April 5, 2004 XTR4? Personally, I would be more interested in the Duratec engined Sport 2000. Whatever they bring, I hope they realise how strict the noise regulations are at Goodwood. The Westfield standard silencer on a Pinto is slightly too loud. Quote
Blatman Posted April 6, 2004 Posted April 6, 2004 I'm sure the factory are fully aware of the Goodwood restrictions....... In any case, turbo'd cars are normally pretty quiet, as the turbo does a good job of taking lots of energy out of the exhaust gasses. Getting a Duratec (or a Pinto, or any N/A car for that matter) quiet enough to pass a 98dbA noise test isn't difficult either..... Quote

Its a different story with TB's on so much less noise but even then will struggle to reach 98db Buzz Quote
YouMustBeJoking Posted April 6, 2004 Author Posted April 6, 2004 I'm sure the factory are fully aware of the Goodwood restrictions....... The original comment was a bit "tongue in cheek". I should have put a smiley in the middle but I couldn't find an appropriate one. Before I had heard of this website, I bought a standard silencer from Westfield, thinking that this would be the simplest solution to my exhaust problems. I was very disappointed to find, once it had been modified to fit, that it was so noisy. With the addition of a jetex decibel insert up the tailpipe I can just get past the Goodwood noise meter. I didn't realise that the XTR4 had a Turbo Why do carbs create more induction noise than throttle bodies? Quote
Blatman Posted April 6, 2004 Posted April 6, 2004 IME, the difference in negligible, and in two cases that spring to mind, the TB's make *much* more noise than carbs. One of those cases is Matt Seabrooks Zetec car. I recal his TB's making *much* more noise than the Webers he had on before, and a C******m I know of who's induction clatter is positively painful, even from the paddock...... Quote
conibear Posted April 6, 2004 Posted April 6, 2004 I agree with Blatman, my Duratec on TB's noticabily makes as much induction noise as my old pinto on 45's. FWIW IMO induction noise probably does not make a significant difference at a noise test on a track day. At the end of the day you need a 7" silencer well packed with sufficient capacity. My 230bhp Duratec which will be at Goodwood when the weather dramatically improves, at last test was well below 98dBA Ian Quote
Nick M Posted April 6, 2004 Posted April 6, 2004 FWIW IMO induction noise probably does not make a significant difference at a noise test on a track day. Actually I think you'll find induction noise *is* a big deal, hence why you see cars at quiet trackdays, e.g Combe, Goodwood, Bedford, with airboxes and other attempts at keeping induction noise under control. Keeping the exhaust quiet is in many ways easier than the induction system. Quote

I personally cannot see why Nick and feel we all get taken in with this induction thing. The exhaust outlet is generally tested at 500mm @ 3/4 revs, which on a WF is probably nearly 2000mm from your inlet trumps whatever they are. I have purchased a noise meter so will experiment with this in the near future. Ian Quote
Nick M Posted April 6, 2004 Posted April 6, 2004 Depends which noise test you're talking about though. Static noise tests in the paddock are one thing but the drive-by tests at Goodwood, Donington, Bedford, etc., are all sufficiently sensitive such that induction noise can get you thrown off. Quote

conibear Posted April 7, 2004 Posted April 7, 2004 Got my noise meter today and done two tests trying to determine what if any, induction noise disturbance there was on my 2L Duratec with TB's. First test, at 75% revs (4500rpm) @ 500mm 45 degree angle from exhaust outlet it read 94dBA, at same revs @ 500mm from TB inlets recorded 93dBA. Second test, @ exhaust 95dBA and the same at TB inlets. Therefore, on my engine I think induction is not an issue because. A). During static pitlane noise test, induction noise although similar would be at least 1.8metres from meter as the officials only test exhaust, currently of course. B). Drive by is at 20metres (Goodwood) and induction noise would appear on my engine to be not higher than that of the exhaust. Hope this helps, no doubt it will be throwing more fuel on the fire Ian Quote
YouMustBeJoking Posted April 7, 2004 Author Posted April 7, 2004 Were you standing to the back or front of the car when doing the test? I have been done both ways at Goodwood If they stand at the back of the car, the noise meter is pointing almost straight at the carbs so I would expect the induction noise to make a greater contribution.
