Steven (WE51STE) Posted April 1, 2004 Posted April 1, 2004 Hi, Just a quick question The build has now started the ali panels lined up and drilling commenced. Before the riviting stage can anyone recomend a good sealent ? TIA, Steve Quote
steppenwolf Posted April 1, 2004 Posted April 1, 2004 I think the factory just use standard clear Silicone sealant as supplied by places like B & Q. Quote
DickieB Posted April 1, 2004 Posted April 1, 2004 You could use a special bonding adhesive which would add slightly to your structural rigidity...... Quote
Pembroke Pat Posted April 1, 2004 Posted April 1, 2004 I used polyurethane adhesive which is essentially sealant mixed with superglue. Available from Carbuilder solutions and probably lots of other people. Carbuilder solutions - neil foreman auto p.s. get plenty of marigolds before using the stuff as it is a nightmare to get off of skin/clothes etc. Quote
scruffythefirst Posted April 1, 2004 Posted April 1, 2004 I will use black death (wurth) when I get that far. Its been covered before so a search should turn it up. hth Scruffy Quote
CedricTheBrave Posted April 1, 2004 Posted April 1, 2004 be careful with the clear silicone because it tends to promote rust when in contact with bare metal. the best stuff to use is what they stick the windscreens in with, talk to your friendly autowindscreens man. I used a black locktite silicone mastic stuff, sticks like sh*t to a blanket and goes off in contact with moisture. Quote
CateringVan Posted April 2, 2004 Posted April 2, 2004 Second that - dont use B&Q type sealers as they can cause corrosion. Go to a motor factors such as Brown Brothers or Partco or anywhere who sells car paint to the trade and get some automotive silicon sealer. You should be able to get it in clear, white or black as you require Quote
Mike-SEiW Posted April 2, 2004 Posted April 2, 2004 Normal silicone sealants (that smell like vinegar) promote corrosion in aluminium. I don't understand why, but that's what I've been told. The ones that can be painted over are usually ok as I have understood it, but get something proven, like from Carbuildersolutions as has been previously mentioned. I would also get a dark color (preferably black) as it shows up less since it will squeeze out from behind the panelling in some places when you tighten it down. Quote
