Rhys Posted March 28, 2004 Posted March 28, 2004 Hi, my first MOT is coming up very soon and I need to find a garage that is used to dealing with kit cars. Anybody know one in Scotland? I live in Glasgow but I'm assuming I may have to travel a fair way. I have a Vx on 45's that is registered as a T plate. So I think some tuning might be required for the sniff. Rhys Quote
Blatman Posted March 28, 2004 Posted March 28, 2004 I have a Vx on 45's that is registered as a T plate. So I think some tuning might be required for the sniff. Not necessarilly. If the V5 says "Amateur built from parts" or ".....kit of parts", then it's visible smoke test only. Look for this phrase on the right hand side of the V5, near the engine/chassis numbers. Take your V5 with you so that if the MOT guy isn't sure, you can ask him to check it in his MOT bible..... Quote
Rhys Posted March 28, 2004 Author Posted March 28, 2004 Thanks fot the post. I checked it, unfortunately it says "kit-made from new parts" which is far from true. I have no idea how the previous owner got that on there. Am I in trouble on the sniff? Anybody know a good place to go in Scotland? Cheers Rhys Quote
Rhys Posted March 28, 2004 Author Posted March 28, 2004 Blatman, I just re-read your post. Does "kit-made from new parts" mean I'm subject to visible smog only? Thanks Again Rhys Quote
Blatman Posted March 28, 2004 Posted March 28, 2004 Not sure, to be honest.... does it say made from new parts, or made new from parts? Was the car SVA'd? If so, then there are a couple more things to think about...... Quote
Rhys Posted March 30, 2004 Author Posted March 30, 2004 It definitely says: "kit-made from new parts". I've read a few posts on the Caterham site. It doesn't look good for amiture built cars registered after 1998. I guess I'll just take it down to the local MOT garage and try my luck. The motor has stock internals, is it likely to pass if it is tuned lean? Cheers Rhys Quote
Blatman Posted March 30, 2004 Posted March 30, 2004 Sorry, no idea, and even if I did, there is no logic with MOT men sometimes..... Quote
Rhys Posted April 1, 2004 Author Posted April 1, 2004 Well, it turned out to be a lot less hassle than I thought it would. I explained to the MOT guy that it probably wouldn't pass and he said that he'd tune it lean for the test. When I came to pick-up the car the engine seemed cold which was strange since it was supposed to of just been "tuned back up". I think they might have just driven the car around the corner rather than testing it. Anyway, that works for me! Rhys Quote
