Cheers for the advice, saw the 2000 'w' plate.  Awfull, poor acceleration response, long delay between foot and torque....v. bad example.  This zetec had no low down grunt, poor mid range.

Seen a 2.0li pinto with 1,500miles; up for £9,250 - never contemplated a pinto, but are they just as reliable and economical as Zetec or Vauxhall.

Mainly a road car, some track use very few modifiactions in this months KitCar.

Is MPG similar.....

I have searched Zetec Vs Pinto - mixed responses......any sound advice......

cheers

That's a lot of cash for a Pinto engined car IMHO. Of course, it depends on a the rest of the spec but mine wasonly £6250. Admittedly, it is a '94 SEiW and has nothing special about it in the way of suspension etc. But the engine is OK with its Kent fast-road cam, twin Dellortos, Maxflow head.

The Pinto engine is an old design with single OHC and it's heavy. All that said, it's pretty tough, too and gives good value for money it seems to me.

I'm with MoTCO. For 9+K, you're in Vx/Zetec country with bells on.....No need to go back two decades on engine design........ Don't get me wrong, Pinto's are fine, but not at that money........

If the Zetec you saw was poor, clearly it had something wrong with it, but that doesn't mean it isn't worth buying....... If the owner doesn't know what's wrong with it, get the price down accordingly. If it was firing on all 4, then it almost certainly won't need much more than timing/cam timing, or a carb/injection balance to get it singing. Even with a session on the rollers, I reckon you'd be spending less than 200 quid......

BUT...... there are no guarantees. Equally there is no reason why it couldn't be fixed........

There is nothing wrong with a Pinto but you would never choose one over a Zetec accept to save money. Pinto's are heavier but a pinto engined Westie is still an extremely light car. Paying £9250 it would have to be an emaculate example well tuned. Like Bladders says provided the Zetec isn't knackered it can be sorted cheaply.

cheers fella's.  No the zetec westy had clearly not been looked after the alloys weres cuffed to f*****! what the hell had that done to the bushes, suspension etc...

Seen the 2.0l pinto today, lovely example, twin dellorto's, kent fast road cam, series nine gearbox, for £8,500......but it's running on LPG....

does this sound reasonable, drove v.well, but a little choky when cold...

Nothin' wrong with pintos, but £8.5k, he must be havin' a laugh :D  I would have thought £7k at the very most.

And LPG, why? If you want economy buy a fiesta :D

Don't worry about LRP. Flush through with unleaded for a few tankfulls to get rid of the stuff and use an approved additive. I get away without an octane booster even running a 2.1 pinto.

cheers stu, is the pinto good as a road car, 'cos thats what im gonna mostly be using it for.....or is a a zetec more reliable.....better on cold starts; ECU's and injection Vs old fashioned carburettors....?

is £8k a fair price, it is 100% A1 with full hood, tonneau, alarm, immobiliser and OZ racing wheels...

cheers

So no chance they were second hand alloys then?

You can check the bushes by grabbing the wishbones and giving them a *firm* yank....... besides which, bushes would be under 75 quid (and a Saturdays afternoon's toil) to fix........

Again, if you have 8-9 grand to spend, DO NOT spend it on an 8 valver. A Zetec or a Vx is definitely the way to go.....

cheers blatman, in that case i'll wait until one crops up...yes the wheels on this one moved, and scuffs on the undertrays...and it just didn't feel right....

it's just i live in north west london, and they dont crop up all too often, unless i travel miles to find one.....

uxbridge kit cars is the only local outlet....

You're close enough to me to be a local then!

Be prepared to travel. The car for you is out there, but it almost certainly *won't* be on your doorstep.......

If you fancy a look at two (neither for sale), then I'd be happy to put the kettle on and chew the fat this weekend. PM or e-mail me, if that takes your fancy....... you can expect me to thrust a membership form in your hand though.....  :0  :0

I would discount both these cars for now - the Zetec seems like a dog even if the engine can be easily brought in to line and the Pinto is too much money.

Keep on looking for a Zetec or Vauxhall ( what am I saying? ) engined car for that sort of money. A good Pinto is a reasonable engine but for your budget, you can do better.

Good luck.
