SteveF Posted March 29, 2004 Posted March 29, 2004 Shopped around for this sort of thing a while ago, and found that the AA were the best coverage - as I've got a joint policy with HI that covers either of us in any of 3 cars - it became a balance between number of cars & people which was better. What swayed me at the time was the free European cover - but they stopped that last year. On the usage front - I've not got homestart - and I called them a couple of months ago to ask if they would help me start the westie (see thread on starting problems) and they wanted about £80 to come out and help me - I went round the corner to the local garage - they had a look and helped bump start me for free - they didn't even want paying - but they got a large tin of sweets anyway . Only used them one other time when the westie died on the way to a track day - by the time they'd arrived I'd fixed the problem (faulty earth on ignition - own fault), but the 'nice man' gave it a final check over for me anyway Quote
cidersurfer Posted March 29, 2004 Posted March 29, 2004 Adrian Flux are offering a breakdown policy for £40 with their insurance, haven't got the details yet, they should arrive today... Quote
adhawkins Posted March 29, 2004 Posted March 29, 2004 If you haven't already, it might be worth doing a search for Adrian Flux on here... Andy Quote
SEiGHT Posted March 29, 2004 Posted March 29, 2004 When my suspension collapsed on me (please no "who ate all the pies" jokes thankyou), I just called the man from the RAC and he came and picked me up. They cover you and not the car so it' doesn't matter what car it is. A couple of things to bear in mind though: 1. Make sure they send a flatbed not a tow truck. Unless you don't like your nosecone, in which case a tow truck will do. 2. Make sure the flat bed has some wooden planks. You will scrape your sump/gearbox/rear on the road/flatbed and take a gouge out of it Quote

Hmmmmmmm Food for thought, didnt realise there was a prob with towing a westie ? Thought about it but not to deeply , cant think why not , but then I'm no expert , why would the nose get damaged ? I can only think the angle of the tow when cornering might damage it. is this what you mean ? Quote
windy Posted March 29, 2004 Posted March 29, 2004 With breakdown firms check the small print cos most companies don't cover the following: 1) Car & Trailer with car on trailer. If combination is over a set length nothing is covered. 2) Fixing the trailer - if not possible to fix at the roadside they won't recover you. 3) If you don't carry a spare & have only a tube of tyre weld (std equipment on Lotus Elise & VX220 production cars) they wont fix a puncture if the tyre weld doesn't work. 4) Some companies state that they will recover you home if the car is not repairable & local garages are closed (eg bank holidays). The AA, although promising me this when cover was taken out, would not recover my car home in these circumstances. As always whenever you need the service they are crap! Also I heard a story once about a friend of a friend rodding an engine. When the AA eventually turned up & he explained the situation quite clearly showing him the pool of oil under the car & the remnants of the con rod & piston laying in the engine bay, the patrolman wanted to crank the engine to see if it would start. Muppet! Quote
pistonbroke Posted March 30, 2004 Author Posted March 30, 2004 LOL What a purler , AA man maybe thought it was a scam for a freebie lift home. How long before its costs less to replace an engine than to buy petrol for 100 miles or so ? Quote
