Breakdown Recovery

Thought it a good idea to get some breakdown cover for the Westy , dont fancy leaving it somewhere on the East Lancs Road while I go find help.

Looking at GEM or AA etc. cant decide.

Gem is cheap at £49.95 ish but is pay and claim policy!

Anyone had experiance of using em or any advice appreciated.

I insure with Footman James, part of the package is free roadside assistance/recovery to a local garage.

Worth thinking about

If you have an MSA licence then you get a 15% discount with the RAC

Thanks Niel Im insured through Adrian Flux , perhaps they can sort me out.

Is your policy a pay up and claim it back service, like GEM?

With some policy's you have to pay any towing /garage/repair bills etc.and then submit a claim to the insurers, who then send a cheque (presumably for the amount of the claim) while others like AA and RAC you pay an annual premium and then no further charges (for upto 3 claims, p.a. I believe)

Just wondered weather any member had made a claim this way. or ever had any difficulty recovering the costs of such a claim? are there any pitfalls etc.

because this seems the cheapest way to insure providing it is effective .

thanks

you get a 24 hr freephone number. call them and they send someone out to you and take you wherever you want to go. no bills to pay, easy peasy lemon squeezy  :t-up:

So is this GEM ? and  you've tried  and tested and can recommend em!

What did it cost ya?

I'm a little confused  :p

I thought with GEM  you pay first and argue later !!

Think I will ring me insurers and see what they have to offer

It's Green Flag that Footman James use, and it is just as if you were an AA member.   You need to contact a helpline number, proviide your policy number, and they send out a local recovery firm to deal with it, and pick up the tab.   Simple as that.

My breakdown cover with the CSMA covers the person and not the car - both the wife and I are covered like this - might be worth an option if you already have cover on your tin top ?

you get european breakdown cover as standard with FJ. had to use it last year, fine, easy and no problems.

no extra for the breakdown cover

Good point!

HI already has cover for her tin top

I never bothered since ive always managed to recover myself in 30 odd years of motoring.

But with the computer driven machines of today and the vunerability of the  Westfield its a different kettle of fish. I would feel a lot better  if I could make a call for assistance,

but all I want is to be towed home preferably or at least somewhere's safe.

So far no one has reported any bad experiences , I assume that all these policies seem to work well enough.

Just wondering

If one policy is better than any other ? or do we go for the cheapest option.

Thanks for the input

My insurance is with MSM, and as an option they provide breakdown cover (through Spectrum).

Not had to use them, but they were very cheap. I think it covers Europe too.

Got a mental picture of Captain Scarlet turning up in an SPV to jump start your motor, whilst mysteron agents attempt a new strike by copying a speed camera, then nicking the fines.....

I think it must be time for my meds........
