The Long Way SOUTH, Mon 24th June

After The Long Way North 2 trip we will wake up on Monday morning in Berwick with a need to travel South back home. Some people have other plans and work commitments but if you are looking for a route back then you are welcome to join us for part or all of the way.

Our plan is to leave Berwick on Tweed and travel South on the A1 to Holy Island, the tide will be out and the crossing safe. It is a half hour journey in total. We will park in the large public car park, take the short walk to view the Castle/Priory and up the tower to the viewing point, not stopping for long.

Back on the A1 South for another half hour journey to Bamburgh where we will have a quick photo of the castle. It is important to leave the A1 at the brown sign for 'Budle, Waren Mill and Northumberland Coast Road' so we can drive round Budle Bay to get to Bamburgh.

We will take the Coast Road as far as Low Newton by the Sea where we will turn right signed 'Denwick A1'.

There is an important small turning Left just before the railway line and the Blink Bonny pub. Taking this route means we can drive the bridged road over the A1 instead of having to cross it.

That's the last of the detailed route, now head for Alnwick and then the magnificant road over to Rothbury.

I am on unchartered territory from here, so I think we will take the B6341 to Rothbury (SHELL GARAGE, FUEL, TOILETS, THROPTON) then Otterburn. Right onto the A696 and left to Otterburn Mill to take a left onto the A68 Corbridge.

Left and right over the A69 to continue on the A68 Darlington (divert for 2 miles on A692 to Consett  TESCO, FUEL, TOILETS) to drop us on the A1 South.

On the A1 South (WETHERBY SERVICES, FUEL, TOILETS) then M1 South to Junction 36 which drops us on The Strines road (Mortimer Road) and Ladybower for the last leg on familiar ground in the Peak District.

I am not sure if this is the best way and I know some but not all of it, the direct route is 200 miles for us so I am not going for the absolute best roads, just an improvement on the A1 for 4 hours.

I have just edited the OP to add in toilet and fuel stops PLUS I have changed the route to get on the A1 earlier at Darlington.

I am open to advice if anyone knows of better places to stop for fuel and toilets.
