Benrobson2999 - Kent AO
Day 9 After a terrible night sleep, probably self inflicted as I was so full of “all you can eat buffet” and the room was so hot. I woke at 3.30 and thought I better update the diary for the last few days! The weather had now started to change a little bit. It was still hot and muggy but this morning there was rain forecast… We set off again in two groups. (The fast group and the I hope to get home group) I decided to chance leaving the roof off, and to my joy the rain fizzled out and the sun returned. We had an enjoyable route at a steady pace during the morning. Then over the radio we could hear the other group. Some how our paths crossed and we all met for lunch. Stopping at a shop to stick up on baguettes we continued on to a scenic spot to eat together. We then set off again, heading for the hotel. Being the last night we decided we should have more beers and another steak! Not too many though as it was an early start and a long day the following morning as we set off for Calais. Benrobson2999 - Kent AO
Day 10- (last day) so last night we agreed the best way for the “fast group” and “get home group” to all get to Calais at the same time on the same train was for the slower group to set off 1.5 hrs earlier… (lots of maths calculations after beer 😂) my alarm went off at 5. Rich T had a his brilliant jet kettle on the go already. (This was a great addition to the trip!) off the three of us went at 6. Not raining and we didn’t think forecast either. how wrong we were…. 😂 about 80 miles in we were looking for cover to scrabble to get the roofs on. Except for poor old Rich B who was like a drowned rat. We fuelled up, roofed up and carried on in the awful rain around the twisty D roads for about 150 miles. cars hanging in there, my rear drive shaft/CV making an awful noise. We found our last Boulongerie in a little town and made a coffee under the shop shelter in the street, much to the amusement of the locals who must have thought we were mad! I was quite glad to eventually hit the motorway for the last 130 miles. Again, we got a distant voice of Kenton over the radio. They were quickly gaining on us. They had set off at 7.30. along the motorway the fast group came steaming past, but they had yet to fill up. So we were back in front and now the pace picked up! The race was on and our agreed 55 mph slow group got faster the nearer to home we got 😂 As we approached Calais, the sun came out and the roads were again dry, they over took us again and like magic we all arrived at the euro tunnel together and pleased we all made it. we managed to jump on an earlier train arriving back in Uk for about 4pm. From there we all went out separate ways home with big smiles and great memories of another successful and great tour thanks to all and especially the organisers and route planners for all the hard work they put in. We all covered about 2400-2500 miles in total. 6 out of 7 completed the trip. Unfortunately one was recovered. We had a few break downs, but some really clever fixes and get support from each other. A fantastic group which I was proud to be part of once again. Now we all have some tinkering to do while the cars have a well deserved little rest. Thansk for listening, sorry about the delay in updates. I would have liked to have included much more detail each day but the evenings flew by and it’s hard to keep up! until the next one…. 👋🏼
