Numptie Posted March 25, 2004 Posted March 25, 2004 Hi, I'm wondering if the RAC rollbar as advertised here ... i.e. this fella ... ... is just a bolt on job ... or will I need to cut holes in the bodywork. I could prolly answer the question myself by looking at the car ... but I don't have it with me today TIA Cheers, N Quote
Blatman Posted March 25, 2004 Posted March 25, 2004 If you have a boot box, you'll be Dremelling that. Other than that, it's a bolt on jobbie......... You might not have the car with you, but the search function is still around here somewhere...... Quote
Blatman Posted March 25, 2004 Posted March 25, 2004 A quick search turned up some nice pictures here which may help. I'm sure there's lots more around...... Quote
Numptie Posted March 25, 2004 Author Posted March 25, 2004 Thanks. You'll have to forgive me asking the question before doing a search. It's not laziness, it's stupidity. Won't happen again, wrists slapped. Cheers, N Quote
steppenwolf Posted March 25, 2004 Posted March 25, 2004 I have full details of fitting one in the 'tips' section of my build site:- Installing RAC Roll Bar Hope that helps! Quote
Blatman Posted March 25, 2004 Posted March 25, 2004 Won't happen again, wrists slapped. You mis-understand. It was a reminder that we have an excellent search function. It may be that you find something that will help you. It may also be that you'd care to add to something you find in the archives that we've forgotten about, thereby helping to keep things current and up to date......... Quote
BEN99W Posted March 26, 2004 Posted March 26, 2004 I'm toying with one of these too - I get the impression it is taller than the standard roll bar so will this mean the wet weather gear no loinger fits on? Quote
neilwillis Posted March 26, 2004 Posted March 26, 2004 I was told by the factory that the hood will fit over the RAC bar, but the frame needs to be extended slightly to clear it. If your hood has been fitted for use on an existing setup, you will of course have to re-fit it because it will need to be about 1/2" higher to clear the frame. Realistically, the answer in that case would be no. Quote
thos Posted March 26, 2004 Posted March 26, 2004 I just fitted an RAC roll bar with my boot box, and there's a bit of messing involved with trying to get the bootbox cut right, with a battery Dremel this will take you about 6months cos the battery life is poo. And then just when you think you're finished, and go to put the harness bolts back in, you realise that harness bolts should have been in, but the roll bar was fitted. Quote
steppenwolf Posted March 26, 2004 Posted March 26, 2004 I would say that realistically, the soft top does not really fit with the RAC bar installed as amongst other problems, the bolts that hold the back stay rose joints in place will chaff the hood in use. Quote

So is that to say none of you guys with RAC roll bars use a roof (I know they're frowned upon in a toomuchweight and notinthespiritofmanlysportscardriving context ) but mine isn't a racer. I think I use the roof more frequently than I do the roll bar!! Are there any alternatives, or is it possible to modify the standard bar with some extra bracing?? (I know its only attached by 2 bolts) Quote

adhawkins Posted March 29, 2004 Posted March 29, 2004 I know they're frowned upon in a toomuchweight and notinthespiritofmanlysportscardriving context ) I think they're more frowned on in the context of theydon'tworkverywell and youcanstayjustasdrybywearingsuitableclothing to be honest. Also, in my case, in the context of IdoubtI'devergetinandoutofthecarwiththeroofon. Andy Quote

I haven't used my roof since I fitted the RAC Roll bar last year because of the damage to the material that would almost certainly happen becuase of the design of the back brace mounting. Before that I fitted it three times. 1. to install it 2. To see what it was like to drive with - horrible, hated every minute of it, yucchh!! 3. because it was pi**ing on the way back from Goodwood - horrible, hated every minute of it, yucchh!! I don't race mine much either but if I do get caught out in the rain I would prefer to drive without the hood as you do not get that wet - a tonneau cover is a much better solution as it covers only the unused parts of the car and is actually remarkably water proof. If you want to know what to wear when the weather is bad, I do have a photograph to show you but by popular request, I am banned from displaying it on this board Quote
