deller Posted March 17, 2004 Posted March 17, 2004 Has anyone fitted their car with control stalks for the indicators/wipers etc?? If so where were the controls sourced from and do you know if there would be any issues with SVA assuming an SVA compliant boss and steering wheel was used such as the standard Westfield one? And before anyone starts ribbing me about luxuries in a westie or suggesting I fit air-con remember self cancelling indicators will please the missus and allow me to spend more time building the stripped out racer after this one is finished!!! Please note it looks like the webmaster has returned and updated my details - I've now officially joined the club and officially a member!! Quote
scruffythefirst Posted March 17, 2004 Posted March 17, 2004 Don't know if this is any help but Dax use the sierra column with the shroud and associated switches, with a bit of fidiling i would expect that you could get it to fit, especialy if your building a SDV wich uses a sierra column iirc. (Tbh, the indicator thing was one of the things that tipped dax over the edge in the Dax vs westfield stakes IMHO of course - cossie power had nothing to do with it ) Scruffy Quote
Rob Marshall Posted March 17, 2004 Posted March 17, 2004 On my last Westfield I did fit Mini control stalks (proper Mini not BMW), it was was a bit of a fiddle, had to make up a sleeve as the column was a smaller diameter than the bore of the stalks. Have no idea if it would pass SVA as this was long before the dreaded test came in. I have not bothered to try to fit stalks to my present Westie, as I got use to the dash mounted switches very quickly. Quote
PhilD Posted March 18, 2004 Posted March 18, 2004 Stalks should pass SVA as I can't see how they would exceed the 127mm exclusion area around the steering wheel. The mounting of these stalkes may affect how the steering column would deflect and deform in an accident, and they may have you for that one. I too was a bit concerned about indicator switches, so I have two small push buttons mounted on the dash in easy finger reach with my hands still on the wheel. They are linked to a microprocessor which enable the indicators to be switched off by pressing the button a second time, or they self cancel after 10 seconds. Quote
neilwillis Posted March 18, 2004 Posted March 18, 2004 If you're goping down that route, I'd suggest you get it through SVA, and then do the changes. The Westfield wheel has a collar round it that is a close fit with the dash, so it prevents that sort of mod without removing it altogether. I don't know how the SDV one will be, but for SVA, I'd go by the book, and rely on the tried and approved configuration. A retest is expensive Quote
Mike-SEiW Posted March 18, 2004 Posted March 18, 2004 There's always this one: Together with this "Clockword self cancelling indicator switch / light flashing mechanism": From From http://www.s-v-c.co.uk/ Quote
lunny Posted March 18, 2004 Posted March 18, 2004 Ive fitted a stalk, which went through sva in 1999. it was an old mini stalk, it sticks out on the left hand side and does indicators, horn and main beam. The horn works by pushing the stalk in, with the wire running down the centre of the stalk. The indicators are self cancelling by a screw drilled and tapped into the steering wheel that fits into the cancelling collar. As stated above its a case of using an adaptor tube to fit it. I used a piece of westfield supplied aluminium coolant pipe. Wether itll work will depend on the steering wheel you have and the distance between wheel and dash. You need about 3.5" min. martin Quote
deller Posted March 18, 2004 Author Posted March 18, 2004 Lunny what wheel and boss did you use? I'm using the standard steering column supplied witht he zetec seiw starter kit (allegro/mini fitment) I was looking at a mini metro stalk that looked like it would fit (pretty much the same as a mini I think)but was concerned about then fitting the boss for the steering wheel (which I haven't got yet). What did you use as a shroud over the switch - do you have a piccy at all?? Quote
Rob Marshall Posted March 19, 2004 Posted March 19, 2004 Deller If I remmeber right, it is 14 years since I fitted the stalks to my first Westfield, the Mini stalks I used were the same as Metro ones. As for a shroud I welded one up in steel and covered in leather cloth, I may have a piccy some where, but it is not digital. If you are interested send me a PM. Quote
