gerry
Anyone else out there with an older car experiencing the same problem as me - with the steering column going a bit tight occasionally? Seems to be when it get hot under the bonnet. I have scraped the top bush and lubricated everything, but steering still gets difficult every now and again. I do have a quick rack fitted - approx 2 turns lock to lock - but I cant be the only one here. Any suggestions or similar experiences would be great. Nick A
make sure it is the column for sure by disconnecting the rack if your sure it is could it be one of the u/j going tight occasionally ? any signes of rust around them ? normally a u/j will make the steering feel notchey and in the same position
Nick M
I had this happen to me once on a *very* hot drive back from Le Mans one year. The engine bay was hot and the steering began to feel tight and notchy. Once the car cooled down it didn't do it again and it never did it again afterwards. I just put it down to the rack getting hot and things expanding and getting tight. If you've cleaned the top column then it sounds like it's something lower down. Maybe one of the UJs, but maybe just the rack needs re-lubricating.
gerry
I think the UJs are OK but will check them out. Its always difficult to locate occasional faults. Cheers, Gerry
stu999
Give your top/bottom ball joints a coat of looking at too. Rusty insides will give similar symptoms...
