tex
As title says. It's time for a new one. Wondered if anyone has a reasonable priced yet good jacket that'd withstand all day in the rain
Ian Kinder (Bagpuss) - Joint Peak District AO
hi @tex for general use out of the Westie or driving the Westie? I've been using seperate jacket and water proof trousers in the Westie for six years, but find water runs down your right arm and drips on to your right hip/leg and onto the seat and hence I still get a wet bum. I moved to a one piece biking suit last year.
Kingster
Terry you will never stay dry in any two piece. It always finds a way to seep into your ball sack. You can try my Richa Typhoon if you like - but it’s a one piece . 1
tex
I've been using one piece suits for years... You still get water seepage on laps or they tear. I have a good pair of trousers and jacket atm but the jacket is a bit bulky. I'm after a non padded GOOD waterproof jacket longish at the bottom if possible. I can add layers underneath if needed. Finding a really good 1 piece suit is not easy. Dry suit is best but... Lol.. 😁
Kingster
Yeah - one piece can keep you dry but you sweat on the inside and then… get wet here’s how I solved the problem 🤣 1

A good tip for those really pithing down days in the saddle is a simple plastic sheet over your lap tucked under your arms it stops a lot of water on the lap.. Not all but a good chunk of it. I have a sheet rolled up size of a packamac then it goes over my lap and down the seat sides.. Only used it a couple of times, last time enroute back from Corgarf on the lecht to home.. Rained.. ALL the way.. Had to stop once and change clothing I got that wet.. Nice
Kingster
Don't talk to to me about rain - still have recurring nightmares from the Alps 😳 2

Maybe at the next meet (if our AO ever gets around to actually organising one)
Terry Everall
Just needed a hole drilling through the bottom of the seat to let the water out

Small stones kicked up and blocked them. But your bum does that too, so you still end up sitting in a bucket. 😁 Anyway - apologies for the thread drift @tex hope someone comes up with an actual recommendation for you 👍

I have some in my floorpans on one side. 1: as soon as the car is at the wrong angle they obviously don't drain. 2: far more annoying - they work both ways. Letting more water in than out unfortunately.

SootySport
I can only recommend Gortex jackets, completely water and wind proof. Used them for years for outside work and obviously came to use them for Westfield driving. Came free from my employer so no idea how much they cost. I tried GoreTex as well as some of my expensive mountain biking eVent gear over the years. But when it came to serious rain over an extended drive the breathable materials eventually let water in as you sit in the literal “bucket” seat because they are simply not designed for immersion. Either that or it gets in the seam that is always in the middle of the jacket and creased around your crotch area. A bike one-piece with a diagonal zip arrangement is significantly better. But you will sweat and thus still get wet. The reality is that if you run an aeroscreen, you just have to take it on the chin (or turn into an old wuss and get a car with a proper roof 😉)
