Benrobson2999 - Kent AO
Just did a quick test. Stopped for a photo. Went to restart ignition and nothing…. checked fuses. All seem ok. Completely dead. Battery was new. Any ideas. Wife’s on the way with a meter and jump leads…

Naranja_Al
Is the starter motor clicking or trying to turn the engine over? Do the ignition lights come on? It could be; 1) Heat soak in the starter motor that has damaged the solenoid rendering it useless 2) Loose connection to the starter motor; main 12v connection or the ignition trigger 3) Faulty ignition barrel 4) Poor battery connections 5) Faulty alternator Sorry for my random thoughts!
Benrobson2999 - Kent AO
Nothing at all. Just pulled plug off ignition. Three wires. Surely I should have volts at ignition
BobMet
Have you checked the big fuse on the chassis near the coolant reservoir above the mastercylinders?

Naranja_Al
You should have 12.6v on the main red connection to the starter motor as this is live all the time. Is the main earth connection from the battery to the chassis connected still? Check that the white and red wire on the starter motor from the ignition is connected both ends (starter and ignition)

Ian Kinder (Bagpuss) - Joint Peak District AO
I've just spoken with @Benrobson2999 - Kent AO and we've played a game of twister, where he holds the phone, a mulitmeter, a red probe and a black probe and I then tie him in knots 😉 via the phone. We've confirmed his battery negative isn't connected to the chassis and I've suggested he bolts the two cables on his battery isolator to one post on it, to effecrtively bypass it. I'm awaiting his call to confirm he's running...................... 6
Ian Kinder (Bagpuss) - Joint Peak District AO
He's safely home. I'll let @Benrobson2999 - Kent AO unravel his arms and explain it all..................... 2
Benrobson2999 - Kent AO
Many thanks all. Especially Ian for his remote fix! So basically there is an issue with the earth somewhere. After a bit of fault finding and cable tieing a jump lead from the negative batt terminal to the earth post on the chassis it all sprang back to life and I carefully drive home anticipating the jump leads pinging off at any second (but they didn’t!) thanks all again. This is why the club is great 😊

Benrobson2999 - Kent AO
I will investigate tommorrow more deeply but as Ian said it must be a high resistance joint, on either the engine block to chassis earth or the earth connection to the steering rack.. any how. Best walk the dog now before I get in trouble 😂 1
