Selling car (Part exchange) with a private plate?

My son has bought a car and is part exchanging his towards the value of it. He has a private plate which he has paid to be transferred off the car (by the DVLA) however the expected time to receive the V5C is 4 to 6 weeks. How is  he going to be able to register the details of the sale with the dealership without the V5C?

I plan on calling the DVLA this morning to ask but wondered if anyone on here knows the process?

He is planning to collect the car tomorrow and the dealer wants an extra £300 holding fee until he can provide the V5. My concern is that until his old car is registered with the dealers he is still responsible for it should they decide to use it to commute to and from work.

Hi Jared,

Your son is likely to get the V5 for his car he's planning to part ex in less than a week. The £300 fee is fair.

He could either delay collection of his new car until the V5 arrives or ask the dealer to confirm receipt of his car in writing on collection day.

The V5 isn't proof of ownership it's proof of registered keeper.

Once you get the V5 you can transfer ownership to the dealer online.
