Help on how to fix speedo?

Recommended Posts

Hit some mud (dark and didn't see the mud) and span. Ended up on the grass verve. Car is fine but pride less intact ;) However, since this spin/bump the speedo has stopped working. It lights up and zero's itself so electrical feed to it is OK so I'm assuming the cable got 'knocked' off somewhere in the car. Anyone help me? I need to know where the speedo cable goes to? Does it normally link to one of the wheels?

Help gratefully recieved.

Other than that, a great journey from North Yorkshire to Croydon! :)

There's a sensor that points (I think) at the bolts holding the prop shaft to the diff. I think this is optical, so mud could just have splattered on to it, or you could have knocked it out of alignment or even knocked the cable off.

It's not optical, it works by the hall effect assuming it is of the VDO variety.   You will find the sensor over the inboard lobro on the offside of the car if it is of this type.

It needs to be between 1 and 3mm away from the bolt heads on the lobro joint, and should have two wires running from it.   They can be reconnected either way round.

Ah, ok. My mistake. Probably knocked it out of alignment or knocked the signal cable off then.

Thanks chaps. I've had a look but no luck yet. Fuses are all OK.

What is the inboard lobro ? (I'm new to a lot of these technical terms :) )

I've tried to trace the cables from the speedo. Seems to come into the engine bay and then underneath back towards the rear of the car. I can't see under the middle of the car (i.e. the driveshaft area). Is this where the sensor should be? I've looked around the rear diff and all looks as it should. Only thing that had a wire running into it was a tubular device (size/shape of a mini coke can) which had two tubes going into it to although my hunch is that this is something to do with the braking system.

Fair play to the chap who built it, everthing is very neat and tidy and well put together.

The Lobro joint is attached to the differential on an independent rear suspension car.   If the sensor isn't there (It will look like a big bolt mounted in a bracket above the offside diff flange) it may be reading from the prop shaft.

I am not familiar with the other speedo take off points, but I'm sure someone here will fill you in on that if you need more info.

Cheers. I think I've found a speedo cable halfway along the middle of the car. However I need to get the car on a ramp so I can get under and have a proper look and reattach the sensor.

Thanks all.,

Update. Got some axle stands so I could get a good look and fixed it (sort of). The spindle thingy (now THAT's a technical term ;):D ) comes out from the front of the centre driveshaft and threads on to another attachment. This 'other attachment' is missing some sort of clamp as the speedo worked for 5 minutes driving and then obviously worked it's way loose and the speedo stopped working again. Guess I'll have to source this 'clamp thingy' or get some heavy duty tape and see if that works.
