Captain Colonial
Old news now I know, but this is an excellent in-depth article on the Titan and the man behind it. To say hubris and unheeded warnings is putting it mildly - the man was flying in the face of everything sound. Worth a read.
corsechris
Thanks Scott. That was a good read. Can’t say anything in it was really a surprise though, sadly. Arrogant a********s with too much money and way too big an opinion of themselves are way too common. On the bright side, he is, at least, dead by his own hubris. Shame he took others with him I suppose.
fil46
When I heard this Disaster and saw a few early clips on youtube My instant thought was carbon fibre or the glue joint to the metal ring failure, My knowledge of carbon fibre comes from 20 years of being a big F1 fan in a big way and the want to learn every day about stuff, I have been working with epoxy resin for 2 years now and wound no way concider wraping a steel pipe in carbon fibre glueing ends on then try and do what that Man did all the red flags are massive ,just like his ego such a shame for anyone involved in the loss of loved ones. Any engineer involved with the making of that thing should be red flaged and have no involvment with engineering again
corsechris
Victor Vescovo demonstrated exactly how to go about doing deep dives as safely as humanly possible. It didn't involve ignoring all conventional wisdom, experience, good practice or oversight, nor did it involve setting up exceedingly suspect corporate entities just to avoid any possibility of liability.... I wonder how long before one of these space tourist deals is going to kill someone. Virgin got lucky I think, despite it costing the life of one pilot, they dodged a bullet. Imagine if that had happened with a ship full of paying punters. Blue Origin also lucked out on a few occasions so far. Still, consenting adults and all that. Their choice.
