Mighty Mart
Late to the party on this one, but...... Examining the footage, its difficult to tell where that car was in the line of traffic (8 cars!) before overtaking...... It appears from when you first see his lights that he was overtaking at least three cars being generous....looking at the line of cars, its difficult to see where he could have been except at the very back??? If he's overtaken 8 cars, going past several junctions either side of the road, AND being on the wrong side of any traffic Islands, approaching a blind bend, having his lights on not going to soften the impact.... IMHO a total danger to others and should have been reported. You could be literally saving someone else's life by doing so..... I like to push on and have done the odd silly thing like most have, but this was totally reckless IMHO..... Lets say the worst happened and he'd hit you, totalling your dashcam footage...you'd be hoping (if still alive) someone else came forwards with theirs? 20 odd years ago, I was in an Imprezza pushing on late one night on a short section of Dual Carriageway... Approaching a large roundabout, which has 4 exits - 2nd exit is straight on - a continuation of said dual carriageway with a 70 limit and my route. I see a set of lights approaching at warp speed from DC ahead. To my utter amazement, the 'thing' barely slowed as it raced around the roundabout, approaching me at frightening pace. As I realised it was coming round on me and taking the same exit as me, I tried accelerating hard to get out of the way - I was genuinely impressed and frightened at the same time..... I was hitting over 70 mph on the exit of the roundabout and this 'thing' came past me like I was going backwards - I remember his passenger wing mirror passing under mine as he went past me, rocking my car!!!! Within seconds, he had disappeared. I had my wife and two sons in the car with me btw..... A mile or so up the road, two skid marks, probably 100 yrds long stopped 50 ft short of the next, smaller roundabout, and sat in the middle of it was a renault 5 if I remember correctly - rear ended, with a young girl inside crying - she had just passed her test apparently. The Impact was so severe, her radio had come out of the dash and was on the back seat amazingly....I had stopped and she asked me was it me who had hit her......luckliy she was badly shaken but unhurt. Bottom line was I contacted the police and gave a statement - no car details except I was 99% sure it was a 911 turbo..... Police went back to the scene and pieced together enough of a smashed up stick on no plate to identify only 2 911 turbos it could have been - one was fairly local to me, the other in Scotland. A few days later, they found the driver, who owned up to the hit and run, and bought the girl a new car.... Sometimes you've got to do the right thing... Mart. Man On The Clapham Omnibus
Well Mart, I'm sure I'd have acted in the way you did. The poor girl might get a new car, but she will take a long time to regain her confidence - maybe never. I did report the Audi but typically I never heard a peep from Mr Plod afterwards. I was told that I was too late for a prosecution but subsequently I've been told that is not necessarily the case so quite what happened in the end I have no idea. I can say that in the more than a million miles that I have driven in motoring life I have never been so shaken as I was that evening. I had my son in my car too so it would very likely have been two generations wiped out in one fell swoop. The other event, the car passing me on the wrong side of the very same islands last month, I did not report but it was a close run thing whether to do so or not. As the vehicle in question was a pickup with four seater crew cab, A Mitsubishi L200 somewhat like the one below - possibly owned by someone with a vindictive turn of character!
