Mike-SEiW Posted March 2, 2004 Posted March 2, 2004 Just as I was good and ready to drop the car for the first time to carry its own weight I put on the wheels and realised the rear bolts are simply too long as the nuts I have are not open on the end for some reason. Is there any drawbacks in just shortening them to the same length as the fronts or am I going to regret it in the future should I want spacers or something like that? I'm using the Mike Barnby wheels with I think offset in the region of 24mm or so (just measured it by hand), 13x6.5 I think all around. From half an hours searching, I get two answers to what offset I should use: region of 38mm or region of 20mm. It seems to vary a lot and it's not clear for which generation of cars which applies. Nevertheless my wheels will never get to 38mm (so that's out of the question) and I'm now leaning towards cutting the bolts. Why did they make them so long in the first place? Esthetically, my 24 offset looks perfectly fine (if not a bit too far in in the arches) but I'm not after esthetics, I want it to handle as best as it can. thanks for any input! Mike Quote
davew Posted March 2, 2004 Posted March 2, 2004 i have found this also, the front ones were fine, i decided to fit a 10mm spacer and they seem fine now. The studs popped out of the wheel nuts when I tightened the for the first time a bit concerning since I got the wheel nuts from westfield, I may fit open ended wheel nuts on the rear anyway. Quote
Mike-SEiW Posted March 2, 2004 Author Posted March 2, 2004 I figured out I should have searched for "studs" instead of bolts (that's what food in the stomach can do for you). I've got my answer I think. I'll probably cut them down as I don't fancy having even wider track at the rear compared to front. If and when I need to, they studs can be changed with no major drama as far as I could find out. Quote
conibear Posted March 2, 2004 Posted March 2, 2004 I'm pretty sure SEIW should be ET23/24 I fit minilites on mine and I needed to cut my studs back as well Ian Quote
Mike-SEiW Posted March 2, 2004 Author Posted March 2, 2004 Ok, good to know. Phew. I prolly did the right thing then. this is what happened next after I cut the studs (I lowered it to the ground for the first time) Quote
Leon B Posted March 2, 2004 Posted March 2, 2004 Looking good Mike, but whats taken you so long? Quote
