Hats Off

As summer approaches what hats are us Westfield drivers wearing, I have my trusty tapper hat with a peak and fur ear flaps buts its a bit warm now. I have tried a musto baseball cap but this rarely stays on over 60mph but at least it has a clip to stop it flying away. We really need a good baseball hat with a chin strap.

Anyone found a great solution?

So far I’ve been hatless but the wife has been wearing bandana’s without any issues.

Waiting for the day I can used my Hjc motorcycle helmet..sure it be the wrong colour when the car turns up but I can guarantee it stays on at around 155 mph..unlike my Darth Vader black helmet which looked good but was not good seeing what the traffic was doing behind coming down the slip road.

The Hjc is excellent helmet without the wind noise too.

I gotta agree on summer days without..you have to ask the others?

Baseball cap but it has been nearly lost a few times.

I'm aero screened and use auto retracting Lanyard(works security pass type) on my cap.

Me too, lanyard attached to the harness bolt.

Great question, I’ve got a similar trusty hat that I regularly wear but it does get a bit too hot on a warm day. I’m going to try the lanyard thing as that sounds like a good idea. I have to say though that I do enjoy wearing a helmet unless it’s a really hot day but I think I’m in the minority with that one…

Elastic looped around the roll bar

Elastic or the retractor I use is recommend as you'll be surprised how it jolts your next if you try to climb out with it on. Don't ask me how I know. You do need to stop should it fly off as I have lost one hat by thinking I'll recover it later and you can't reach round with a harness on to recover it either!

There's a surprising number of variables to this!

Ignoring our Aero screened brethren, who surprisingly have it a little simpler!

With a wind screened car, it's really down to turbulence in the cabin at speed, more than basic hat styles. If you have a windscreen alone, a peaked hat is going to be an issue at speed, some work better than others, but may still cause problems, even if you stop them flying off.

The main issue is that the turbulent "wake" of the screen at dual-carriageway screens, tend to make the air blow vertically up the front of your body. - This is what also causes some owners to find breathing through their noses at those speeds, tricky/uncomfortable. It also catches under the brim of peaked hats, regardless of what you do. And if you do manage to stop the hat flying off, it can sometimes cause it to flap, instead. (Of course, theirs a whole range of effects depending how tall you are, precise angle of windscreen, how far back or forward your seat is, and how high the seat it, and so on.)

If you use the factory side-screens (doors) you get almost none of this. I've had no issues with side screens on, with peaked hats, at well over 100mph (on track).

Of course, many don't like the side screens, which is fair enough. In which case, I'd strongly advise using the clear plastic wind deflectors that clip onto the windscreen in their place. Much more discrete, and though not quite as effective as full sidescreens, they reduce the turbulence significantly.

Also, using things like a tonneau cover over the passengers side, when on you won, all help make a difference!

I have adjusted the standard Westfield baseball cap to have an under the chin cord with a tightening toggle. When driving doorless and it works loose, I simply open my mouth and the cord pulls the cap back on!! Patient applied for 😀😀. Next thing I’ll need is a fly mesh for the times my mouth is open.

This is the same as my hat but in grey, work really well but you do get strange looks in the summer, the ear flaps stop you going deaf as well

i have been looking at surf baseball caps with chin straps

Unless it's a really hot day, I generally stick with a helmet to be honest. Even with a windscreen!
