I had the same issues on my fixed rear arches. I got so bored with the limitations that I cut the arches, every now and again they would still catch on bumpy corners It's nigh on impossible to say with certainty. I had them fitted with 10mm spacers at the rear, to bring them right out in the arches. One of the main issues you have is bodywork/tub fitment. The tub is not symmetrical down the centreline of the car, so the left and right sides around the rear wheel arches aren't identical. On top of this, it's normal to have to tweak the position of the tub on the chassis to achieve the best "look" and fit of all the other body work. This means that the tub may not always end up perfectly lined up on the centreline of the chassis itself, though it will be close. This can then cause an issue when spacing the rear wheels to their limits. In my case, with 10mm spacers, the rear near-side was absolutely perfect, no issues over the whole range of wheel movement. However on the off-side, at full compression, the tyre could just rub on the return lip of the wheel arch. I shaved the lip down slightly to avoid the contact and it was fine. Without measuring the returns, side to side, no one could ever tell! That said, I've also over the last couple of years changed the rear springs for a slightly higher rated set, which apart from improving the handling, would have also largely eliminated that full compression rub.
