If you’ve ever wondered this, or just fancy wasting 15mins watching something you already know this interesting video popped up on my farcebook feed

I found out the hard way and fitted stupidly large chokes in Dellorto's 30 odd years ago, then wondered why it would not run till 4000 RPM.... I was unaware of airspeed in those days 😆.

I've been repairing 4s/2s carbs since the 70's and know a fair amount of details for their operation/failings, but this video is amazing at showing how the petrol droplets form and are then atomised to produce good detonation. Saying that a lot of the engines I worked on could have run with a direct tube as they were so basic and worn🤪. One of the tests we did was blowing air from the intake side and checking that the fuel distributed properly, a bit risky with actual fuel but fun doing it.

My very first dealings with carbs were in the early 80's, on an old moped. Thinking I would make it go faster I removed the airbox and filter...

Top speed had been 30mph, now modified it went 25

Thankfully I am far wiser - I think.

I can see and know how you would achieved such results..... been there done that, even set fire to a small corner of the thankfully brick-built outbuildings at home..... I've still got a box full of 1980's MINKUNI carbs for FS1E mopeds....... they are so basic yet worked so well, I suppose that's the Japanese engineering !

Never had Yamaha's but did mess with Mikuni's on something, CB750 and maybe the 550, that was a long time ago.
