I have exactly the same issue with my black bonnet. I’ve been advised that black is the only colour where Westfield tends to match exactly all others don’t and are different shades.

so I’m going to buy some gel coat from Westfield and try to repair my bonnet. I’ve got hairline cracks round the locks, and on the front bottoms where there appears to be no reinforcement fibre and research suggests this is where the initial gell runs and is too thick. But it should be straight forward to repair I hope

found this online:

Repairing Minor Gelcoat Cracks

Use a rotary tool or scraping tool to open the crack into a “V” shape. You will need to go through the gelcoat to the fiberglass and open the full length of the crack. Next, use 80-grit sandpaper to scuff up the opening you created. Fold the sandpaper so you can get a corner of it into the opened crack.

After removing the dust, you can fill the crack with G/flex® 655, Six10® or WEST SYSTEM 105 Epoxy Resin®/20X Hardener thickened with 406 Colloidal Silica Adhesive Filler.

After the epoxy has fully cured, wash it with water to remove any amine blush. The blush is water-soluble, which means water is the best option to remove it. You can now sand and apply a color matching gelcoat to the area.

If the gelcoat cracks were caused by fiberglass flexing, add some fiberglass reinforcement to the backside to help prevent future cracks.

Sorry not a new bonnet - can get a carbon one from Germany for £600 if you can figure out postage, he couldn’t work out how to get me a nose cone 😢

You don't need to figure out postage, supplier does. They need to use an EU and UK delivery service and it should all be ok!

The black gel coat Westfield supplied me was a very poor match, colour wise. Fortunately I was repairing only a couple of small holes in the nose so I can live with it.

same here, i painted my car and thought that black was black. but after an accident a new bonnet was ordered and fitted by the factory, once i got the car home it was obvious which bits were new. you can only tell in very bright sunlight , but it annoys the heck of me still. will repaint the bonnet one of these years...

I would strongly disagree with this. I've had black gel coat tubs from them in the past, (while the GRP work was still done in-house, too), and it wasn't a great match, made the regular black gel coat look slightly grey by comparison.

I think they possibly mean they have fewer complaints about the black not matching, it is possibly easier to see, on other colours, or just that the variations on other colours is even greater.

Not surprised; I know we pull your leg about it, but your black bodywork, under certain light, looks almost like an incredibly deep, deep, forest green.

Here’s a random black nose I got off a gent on here (I think) with some free carbon 😛 matches perfectly - excuse the wonky eyes
