So, is it possible to have a 1998  Westfield Kit registered there?  I can see about seven members on the Map so hope one of them can help.

I’m sure I recall Siltech helped build a Sport 250 to meet the emission requirements in Germany. I assume it’s a permanent move and not less than a year etc.

There are lots of Westfields in Germany, I think at some point they were even imported officially. There is a guy on FB, Christoph Bettag, which knows a lot and still makes special parts for Westfields in Germany.

Hi!

A close friend certainly ran a Westie for some time in Germany.

What is it you would like me to ask him?

I have a German buyer for my Westfield on carbs. he has been told he would have to pass some emmisions tests and supply certificate of compliance, which Westfields don’t need here.  Need to know what process he has to follow for a low volume car import as I think he trying to follow the usual mainstream car import process.

Hi!

Friend got back to me, I'm afraid this being Germany everything is complex and complicated. So, according to him there's not a one size fits all answer. I'll speak to him today or tomorrow to find out more, but I suspect he'd need to know some specifics of the vehicle (like age, I presume) and the county it's going to.

He’s in Nord-Rhein, Westfalen

Its 1998 2.0litre on carbs.  Non factory build.
Thanks for the help,  Bernie.

Small world - Nordrhein-Westfalen is where I used to live and where my friend is local. I'll speak to him in a bit...

So far he's already recommended the "Lotus Forum" and "Seven IG" - they are German clubs and according to him have free access to their forums. He recommends for the buyer to ask there since there'll be a number of people who'll have gone through the process. However, I'll see what he's got to say as well.

Right, short version: I've not got a set of requirements or even a yes/no answer.

Longer version: due to the relatively young car but being on carbs it may not be possible to register it in Germany. Emission requirements from year of build apply and in 1998 there were no cars without catalytic converter built in Germany any more.

However, my friend strongly recommends the two clubs/groups I've mentioned, there will be people with current and intricate knowledge.

Lastly, he recommends that if you're the vendor to not get drawn into this too far as you'd want to avoid "promising" anything that's not in your control to the buyer.

Sorry I can't be of more help.

Does look like it could get messy doesn’t it.

Many years back I sold a Cobra kit for export to Germany. Couldn’t have been simpler from my perspective. The guys were at Stoneleigh on a buying trip, they gave me a carrier bag of £50 notes and drove it away. Some years later, we sold the Marcos to a chap from Holland, again, utterly painless for me, he transferred the asking price into my bank, came over on the ferry then drove it away.

In both cases the buyers were dealers, so all the hassle was at their end, and no doubt things have got much more complicated over the years.

Hi! I'm not sure how and whether the regs have changed, however I do presume so.

The same friend made a lot of money some years back selling grey imports of new cars across Europe. That's when he ran his Westfield, too.

He knows of an Esprit in Switzerland that wasn't registered back then and since it never had a reg will now not get a German one ever, emission regs. Also, for kit cars the first reg of the actual vehicle counts, not of the donor.

Might not be impossible, but I also would leave those worries to the buyer.

Thanks jaykay you’ve been a great help.   I’m now going to leave the subject alone.  Will leave the decision to my prospective buyer.

Much as I would want to do everything possible to help secure a sale I likewise would do the same and push it back to the buyer to do their own enquiries.

They should have a much better knowledge than you of their own countries regulations and if they don’t then it’s unreasonable to expect the seller to find out for them. more so if they’re looking to import something out of the ordinary from a foreign country.
