Shouldn't cap it off completely as it provides essential ventilation, get a vented top like a chinese cap or similar then no birds will be able to fall down.

There are ventilation grills in the room already, but I get your point. When I first moved here the fireplace had a gas fire installed, I removed that and went solid fuel, as the flue was clear already. I have it blocked off again with my plastic in case any soot the bird dislodged falls down again. I will see how this winter goes and take it from there.

Yesterday I put 2 pieces of salmon under the grill . 1 piece for tea the other for next day . took the one piece out and served it up with salad , happily tucked into my meal sat in the dining room and thought I could smell something burning like someone was having a barby outside and the fumes were drifting into the house . When I went back into the kitchen with the empty dish discovered the other peice of salmon  on fire and happily burning away . everywhere covered in black soot and kitchen full of smoke , took about 2 hours to clean the mess up before HID came home .

It's normally toast with me, the machine stopped popping up years ago so have to do it myself now - unless the phone rings and end up with what you had.

Does burned salmon transmogrify into burned bread and vice versa? There's a PhD in there somewhere!

I popped round to the neighbours in January and when I came back I had to remove this chap from the lounge

Oh yeah happens a lot here, put bread in and you could get a pizza out, fish or a bottle of red wine ( not that has happened yet, but I wish it would) , if I was religious I would say it was a miracle.

No, that would be five barley loaves and two small fishes. You have to have what you're given!
