Afternoon all,

I am about to tackle my first DIY oil and filter change on our 2017 X3 30D 6 cylinder N57 engine.

If anyone has done this are there any wrinkles I need to know? And the sump plug is above that little hatch in the undertray isn't it? Looks a bit far back to me and I would hate to drain the torque convertor......

Cheers, Stuart

There seem to be quite a few how-to's on Youtube.

Blatters yes I've seen those ta. Didn't find one that specifically identifies the sump plug on the 3 litre engine though. And horizontal at the back of the engine is not what I'm used to. Paper filters neither.....

Well I drained 7 litres of black stuff out through the little hatch in the undertray, changed a quite strange paper filter arrangement and refilled it with 7 litres of lovely golden Millers.

And all is well.  One thing I've learned, though - it has a dipstick which BMW for some reason hide under the engine cover and disguise with a black plastic top so it ain't obvious.  At minimum on the dipstick the i-Drive vehicle status checker showed max on the screen.  When topped up to max on the dipstick the i-Drive still showed max.  So I won't be relying on that anymore.......
