Blatman
Afternoon all. It's time to replace my ancient Ford Focus with something more modern, that is ULEZ compliant and which I *want* rather than what I can afford... sort of... I have settled on a 218i with the 3 cylinder turbo 136bhp motor mostly 'cos I am concenred that even a modern diesel will be getting banned in city centres before I'm ready to flog this one. Here are my "other" questions; 1. The current Focus is a diesel, has (had...) the same HP but nearly 100ft/lbs more torque than the Beemer. So will I miss the torque? Probably. Does it matter in the real world is the question. 2. Dual cariageway / motorway performance. Will the 3 banger perform equally as well as my Focus when going for an overtake or will I be rowing the cogs? I don't mind, but I'd like an idea of wat to expect. I am going to try to find one to test drive this week so anything else that you guys might want to mention will be gratefully received. Ta... Ian Kinder (Bagpuss) - Joint Peak District AO
The wife's got a 2018 118i (150bhp, 1.5L 3 cy turbo), it's an auto and it goes well. It sounds like half a V6 at some engine speeds too. Probably not as toruey as the Focus. She prefers it to my more powerful 330i ! Which suits me! Rhett Turner - Black Country AO
My brother-in-law swapped from a TT to a 118i and is perfectly happy. I ran a 120d auto for quite a few years and had no complaints, my wife who has a Mini Cooper S used to switch to eco mode to drive it. As the 118i is neither powerfull nore torquey, you may notice the lack of torque, why not look at the 220i as the additional power together with more usable revs would probably make up for the difference and if an Auto it would swap cogs when needed (and the Autos are quicker and more economically anyway)
maurici
Anything under a 40i or a 35i is not worth looking at. Deffo You indeed need AT LEAST 326hp to overtake confortably and pull from stop lights quick as a lightning...

But with Covid 19 my travel habits have changed radically and are unlikely to go back to previous levels. As many businesses have discovered, there were other ways (some would say better) ways of working. We just had to be forced in to it! Motorway/A road trips are likely to be many fewer than before but for those two or three times a trip when I put my foot in it, I want to know if I'm going to have to get busy with the gearbox too. And I should have said, definitely no autos... 2 hours ago, maurici said: Anything under a 40i or a 35i is not worth looking at. Test drove an M240i and loved it, but I found something with more power for not much more money and with a better grin factor For now I just want to replace the tug...
