Given how often people suggest to K-swap in a K20 engine on most F20C discussion!, it's interesting to see not as many similarities as I expected. Clearly the sump pan isn't finned for FWD or RWD use. There's a solenoid on the front of the block that the F20C doesn't have. The crank sensor is on the exhaust side of the block, rather than intake. Quote
jeff oakley Posted March 16, 2021 Posted March 16, 2021 That is a lot of damage especially for a car engine. Have seen worse. As a mechanic in the 80's we had a truck engine that ran away when it was being worked on and that only stopped when the crank snapped in half and took out the block on both sides head and part of the chassis. The cab was only saved as it was tilted out of the way but the shrapnel went over a largish area. There was nothing on it that could be reused That was the most violent thing I had seen and all attempts to stop if failed. Would have made a great video had we had phones back then Quote

Very strange to have the 2nd bent rod too, though he hinted at hydraulic lock as a potential cause? I'd expect that to have impacted all cylinders though? Any one stripped an engine that's had a proper drink of water? I hope we don't see a similar F20C strip down from any on here! Quote
Captain Colonial Posted March 16, 2021 Author Posted March 16, 2021 Best one I saw was a diesel engine in a bin lorry. It seized completely just after it had completed its collection round, meaning it had 10 tonnes of household waste in the back. The engine swap took a fortnight, by which time the smell was so bad they had to push it out of the workshop and work on it outdoors. I was there when they finally got it going and lifted the tailgate to empty it... biggest rats I’ve ever seen, the size of small dachshunds and dozens of them, who’d had a hell of a party back there, all ran out at once in every direction, screeching. Big burly mechanics screaming and running for the hills... wish I’d had a phone camera at the time. 1 Quote
corsechris Posted March 16, 2021 Posted March 16, 2021 Most surprising one I saw was on a De Tomaso Pantera. It was running (just) and sounded really rough. Eventually we whipped the engine out and stripped it. Crank snapped in two, but the block was holding it in place well enough for it to still run...somehow. Wouldn't have believed it had I not seen it with my own eyes. Grabbing 3rd instead of 5th at max revs and a bit apparently. Quote

Well the fact it started at all is what I was meaning. I did see a vid on FB a while back where they started 3 old scrappers with no oil in, an old Ford a Peugeot and a Honda. The Ford and pug seized fairly quickly. The Honda lasted a good while and even long enough that they took it for a drive aswell before it finally conked. 1 Quote

Crank snapped in two When I was doing my apprenticeship at Mercedes-Benz (commercials) in the early 90's we had a old 1980's Volvo F10 tractor unit that was used as the 'old shunter' for moving trailers around. It always had this knocking from the bottom end. As I was the apprentice (cheap labour, but more than happy to pull this apart) I was told to have a look, it came to light the crank on that had snapped but at such an angle it the 2 sections would still interlock and that ran....it was nicknamed Christine (Stephen King!) as it was pocessed, whilst I was lifting the engine out with a large gantry/A-frame and block and tackle, one of the chain links snapped and down the engine came, how no one was injured I will never know! I have had a handful in the workshop (normally after bad weather) with various levels of damage, but never a snapped rod, just slightly bent. I remember a V6 Vectra that came in, the owner said it just started misfiring, after some diagnosis it came to light it was low compression only on one cylinder, started stripping down and clearly there was evidence of water in the air filter housing, we went back to him and he told us 'Oh, there was a little puddle'. Anyway only one bent rod, and that was only ever so slightly bent. Quote
